About

You can add WebVTT files to text tracks in Video Time activities. WebVTT (.vtt) files are plain text files that add subtitles or chapter markers to your videos. They are widely supported and can be created with any basic text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit. Subtitles and captions follow the same format – when creating them, there’s no difference in how the .vtt file is structured.

How to create a .vtt file

  1. Create a new text file
    Open a plain text editor and start with the following line:

    WEBVTT

  2. Add content on purpose

    Subtitles or captions

    For subtitles or captions, each entry includes a time range followed by the text to display.

    HH:MM:SS.mmm --> HH:MM:SS.mmm

    Example:

    WEBVTT

    00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:05.000
    Welcome to our introduction video.

    00:00:05.500 --> 00:00:10.000
    Here’s what you’ll learn today.

    Chapters
    For chapters, each entry only needs the start time and the chapter title. The next timestamp automatically marks the end of the previous chapter.

    WEBVTT

    00:00:00.000
    Introduction

    00:02:00.000
    Setup

    00:05:30.000
    Summary

  3. Save the file

    Save your file with the .vtt extension, for example subtitles.vtt or chapters.vtt. Use UTF-8 encoding to ensure all characters display correctly.

  4. Upload the file

    You can now upload your .vtt file in the text track settings.

Tip: For longer videos, consider using a subtitle creation tool to generate and sync subtitles more easily. Several free tools are available online.
