Your schedule may likely change. Some employers rotate schedules weekly while others do not. If your employer is a restaurant or in food service, you will likely be given a rotating schedule.

Can I request a specific shift?

It is very important that you are willing to work any shift: night shift, weekends, etc. If you are in food service, evenings and weekends will be the busiest times, and your sponsor will need you then. Some of our sponsors even offer higher pay for employees who work on weekends or night shift.

Remember that the employer is obligated to treat you as they would any U.S. worker. In most of these positions, U.S. workers could not request shift preferences and the sponsor has no obligation to grant you any shift(s) that you may request. Therefore, our clients are expected to be available to work any shift needed concurrent with the employer needs at the time of hire.

As a BDV client, you should not make specific requests to your sponsor. However, you may find a co-worker who could switch/cover your shift, and present this idea to your supervisor.

BDV Solutions serves as your point of contact should you have questions about your work shift before starting work, and we can engage with the employer to determine whether they can meet your shift preference in extremely limited circumstances.

Your sponsor has the final say on any schedule requests.

What if I am required to work night shift?

We understand that you may never had to work at nights before, and it may be difficult for your body to adjust to the new schedule. We've written this article to provide some tips for successfully working a night shift.
