You need to have conversational English before you can start working for your Sponsor. Though our staff speak many languages, we limit speaking with BDV clients or providing information in other languages, because we know that having some English ability will serve you well in the US.

Having basic English competency is important for on-the-job safety. In addition, English can help you more quickly adapt and be successful in the U.S. (Conversational English is also a requirement for naturalization if you want to become a US citizen.)

Upon your work authorization, you should be able to offer/understand more than basic greetings and have a real conversation with your supervisor or co-workers. Please know that BDV sponsors have the right to not hire you and/or to withdraw your I-140 (sponsorship of your green card) if you are not able to communicate in English.

We recommend Level 3 or higher out of 5:

Level 1 - beginner (basic greetings)

Level 2 - elementary (discuss a few topics)

Level 3 - intermediate (discuss many topics)

Level 4 - advanced (quick and easy conversations)

Level 5 - fluent (very experienced and advanced)

At your work authorization (visa approval, Green Card, or EAD, whichever comes first), you will need to demonstrate that you have conversational English competency to our Client Services Team.

Below are resources that may help you learn English. Happy learning!
