Ending your EB-3 job well

You may have finished your 1 year commitment to your sponsor and your green card is approved.

Or, after one year of work, your green card may still be pending.
(Note: BDV does not recommend leaving while pending until you talk with Client Services and we advise you on next steps for your case. We also do not advise leaving your job before 1 year.)

Either way, if you decide to move on, you should leave appropriately, as this will create goodwill and a good relationship with your sponsor. You never know when you might need the assistance of your EB-3 employer (ie - a future job reference, etc.)

Inform BDV

Please let Client Services know when you leave your EB-3 job. We would like to save your last day of work in our system. If your green card is pending, we will send you information about porting, attorney contact, and next steps.

Have a "next step" set up

We do not advise leaving a current job until you have another one lined up. Do not just assume that another job will come open when you quit the current job. Unless of course, you have finances to support yourself in the interim time of job searching.

Give two-week's notice

When you are ready to depart from the job after the work fulfillment period, let your employer know you are leaving at least 2 weeks ahead of time (you could give them one month's notice so they could fill your spot) and thank them for the sponsorship opportunity. We recommend you provide this notice in writing to your supervisor or HR manager in a simple, straightforward way to avoid any confusion or misunderstanding (see next step).

Provide a resignation letter

Submit a letter to your manager or HR. Here’s a template for a professional resignation letter:

Dear [Manager’s Name],

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally resign from my position at (Sponsor Name), effective (Last Working Day, typically two weeks from the date of the letter).

This decision was not easy, as I have enjoyed working here and appreciate the opportunities you have provided. However, I have been offered a new position that aligns better with my personal and professional goals.

I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition. Please let me know how I can help during this period, whether it be training my replacement or completing any outstanding projects.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Sincerely,
