Permanent residence gives you the right to live and work in the United States indefinitely. You may also petition for close family members (spouse and unmarried children) for permanent residence.

But there are additional advantages to becoming a U.S. citizen through naturalization:

  • Vote in federal, state and local elections.

  • Hold public office and serve on jury duty.

  • Hold a U.S. passport that allows visa free travel to most countries.

  • Leave and re-enter the U.S. at any time without being subject to inadmissiblity or abandonment of permanent residency.

  • Petition parents, married children and children over 21 and others for permanent residence.

  • Cannot be subject to deportation or removal proceedings.
