Which date is the hire date?

Accuracy is important when reporting the hire date.

The 'hire date' in employee benefits seems simple, but it is important to get it right. 

  • The hire date is the first date worked. Therefore, it should reflect whether the employee truly arrived for active work. 

  • The hire date, if referring to a reinstatement or a re-hire after the employee temporarily left the organization, should reflect the first date of full-time work. 

  • The hire date should match payroll records and the employment contract. 

Please input the true hire date. Avoid putting in a rough estimate or a date that fits a custom waiting period. If this date is not accurate, it could possibly impact the coverage the employee receives down the road with significant claims.
