How "Match My Gift" Works: for donors

The Match My Gift service simplifies corporate donation matching by providing you with the exact organization details and transactional records your employer requires to verify your charitable gift.

What is "Match My Gift"?

Match My Gift is a service from Better Giving that provides you with the exact technical and tax details (such as legal entity name, EIN, transaction ID, and timestamp) required by your employer’s corporate giving platform to match your donation - this can sometimes mean a 100% match on your donation.

It's almost like free money!

Why do I need to submit the match request myself?

Most employers require the employee (the donor) to initiate matching requests directly through internal security or HR portals (like Benevity or CyberGrants). Better Giving cannot access your company’s internal system on your behalf, but we provide all the data you need to complete the form in under two minutes.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Donors

These take longer to read than to do!

  1. Make your donation:

    • Add your employers name when asked in the donation flow

    • Note the donation details on your confirmation screen OR in the email receipt you will be sent. These are important.

  2. Locate Your Employer’s Matching Gift Portal:

    • Search your company intranet or HR portal for terms like "Matching Gifts," "Workplace Giving," or "Corporate Giving."

    • Common platforms include Benevity, CyberGrants, YourCause, or Causecast. If you can't find a portal, ask your HR or Benefits team directly if a program exists.

  3. Complete the Match Request Form:

    • Copy and paste the specific details provided in your Better Giving follow-up email (or on your donation confirmation page).

    • Crucial Step: When asked which charity received your donation, always enter Better Giving, Inc. and our EIN (87-3758939). Because Better Giving is the 501(c)(3) that processed your gift and issued your tax receipt, our records are what your employer will verify against.

  4. Notify Better Giving:

    • Return to your Better Giving donation page (if you did not sign up for a donation page when you donated, just click here and sign up using the same email address you used for your donation tax receipt). Then, click the button confirming you've filed your request. You'll also see a record of the donation being matched in your personal donation dashboard.

    • This flags your donation in our system so our compliance team can quickly verify and process your employer's match request to the nonprofit of your choice as soon as it arrives.
