Employer Matched Giving: FAQs

Simple steps to complete the information your employer needs to match your charitable donation plus more FAQs.

Which organization name and EIN should I enter on my employer’s form?

Always list Better Giving, Inc. as the recipient charity, using EIN 87-3758939.

Why? Better Giving, Inc. is the legal 501(c)(3) non-profit entity that receives your initial donation and issues your official tax receipt. When your employer attempts to verify your gift, they check against the official receipt issuer. Listing the end beneficiary - the nonprofit you want to the funds to go to instead of Better Giving, Inc. will cause your employer's verification system to reject the match request.
We then match the nonprofit name and grant the funds to the nonprofit - the matched donation gets where you want it to go!

Where do I put the specific project or cause I wanted to support?

If your employer’s form includes a field for "Grant Beneficiary," "Program/Designation," or "Notes," enter the specific campaign or cause name listed in your email (e.g. the specific nonprofit project). If there is no designation field, do not worry - Better Giving automatically routes matched funds to the same beneficiary project as your original gift.

What if I donated in a non-USD currency (e.g., GBP, EUR, CAD, crypto or stocks)?

Your employer’s form will usually ask for the donation amount in USD. Your Match My Gift email provides both your original currency amount and the approximate USD equivalent at the time of transaction. Enter the USD value on your employer’s form unless the form specifically allows multi-currency or crypto/stocks selection.

I can't find a matching gift portal on my company intranet. What should I do?

Reach out to your HR, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), or People Ops team and ask: "Does our company offer a corporate matching gift program for employee charitable donations?" If they do not have a automated portal, they may provide a paper or PDF matching gift form that you can complete. We give you those details as well on the email you receive confirming your intentions to ask for matched funding.

Why doesn't Better Giving tell me my company's specific guidelines or deadlines?

Corporate matching rules, annual maximums, eligible causes, and submission deadlines vary by company and can change from year to year. Your employer’s internal portal or HR department are always the single source of truth for your current benefits.

What happens after I submit the match request to my employer?

  1. Your employer’s giving platform sends a verification request to Better Giving, Inc.

  2. We confirm that your donation was received and matched to the exact transaction ID.

  3. Your employer disburses the matching funds to Better Giving according to their payout schedule (typically monthly or quarterly - note the delay!).

  4. Better Giving passes 100% of the matched funds directly to your designated grant beneficiary, the nonprofit of your original donation.

Why is it important to click "Let Us Know" on my donation page after filing?

Notifying us alerts our finance team to expect an incoming verification request from your employer’s vendor. This reduces administrative processing time and ensures your match gets approved without delays.

Can I get a corporate match if I donated stock or mutual funds?

Usually, yes. Many medium-to-large companies allow employees to request matches on gifts of publicly traded stock or appreciated securities.

  • How it works: You enter the USD Fair Market Value (FMV) shown on your Better Giving receipt into your employer’s portal.

  • What to watch for: A minority of companies explicitly restrict matching to "cash or cash equivalents." Check your employer's guidelines for exclusions on marketable securities.

Can I request an employer match for a cryptocurrency donation?

It depends on your employer. Because the IRS classifies cryptocurrency as property, corporate CSR platforms (like Benevity or CyberGrants) may classify crypto as a "Gift-In-Kind."

  • If your employer allows crypto: Submit the USD value listed on your Better Giving receipt at the timestamp of the donation, along with your transaction confirmation.

  • If your employer excludes crypto: If your employer's portal states that "In-Kind" or "Property" donations are non-matching, the request will be declined.

Can I request a match for a grant made through my Donor-Advised Fund (DAF)?

In most cases, no. Corporate matching gift programs almost universally require contributions to come from an employee's personal, out-of-pocket funds. Because a DAF is a tax-exempt entity and the donor received their tax deduction when funding the DAF account, employers usually disqualify DAF grant distributions from corporate matches.

Note: A few forward-thinking employers do offer "DAF matching," but this is rare. Check your internal intranet for explicit language around "Donor-Advised Funds."

Can I request a match for an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)?

Generally, no. Qualified Charitable Distributions come directly from a retirement account (and count toward Required Minimum Distributions) rather than being paid out of your personal liquid income. Most corporate policies state that retirement account transfers do not qualify for employee matching gifts.
