New mileage / usage feature

With our new mileage / usage feature you can create usage packages, with:

It also comes with a better user experience for selecting usages (especially for multiple items). A customer will no longer be able to miss the selection, unless there is only one option, in which case he doesn't need to chose at all.

Order handling has been improved too. You can now easily overwrite the prices and usage amounts in the order details, by simply clicking on the numbers.

This feature handles either mileage, or operating hours. Both behave the exact same way, but are displayed with different units and labels.

We will refer to both of those as "usages" from here on out.

Let's first look at what the customer sees:

When a customer tries to add a cart with multiple usages set up to the cart, he will see a modal like in the screenshot.

Here they can select which usage package best suites their needs.

You can also offer "on-top" usages, which just add a flat amount of kilometers/operating hours for a certain price.

So in the screenshot above you see we have the "Basic Package" selected (which gives us 100km per day, so 300km in total for a booking duration of 3 days) and we have one instance of "50 extra kilometers" for 100€.

So our total mileage for the car is 350km and the price for the mileage is 100€.

Once the car is added to the cart, the mileage can of course still be edited during the booking process. This also happens through the same modal. For that a customer just needs to click on "change" on one of the usage items in the cart:

To use the new feature, you first need to activate the usages on an item, by going to its "condition" settings:

Here you can enable the toggle and enter the current mileage / operating hours (depending on which option you chose) for each sub-item:

The "Mileage options" you find here are the old ones. You can ignore them.

With the condition active, you can go to the "Attached usage offers" box in the item details and either create a new usage item, or attach an existing one.

Since you will initially have no usage items, we first create one:

You will see a pop-up modal asking you for some basic data for this new usage:

In this example we simply called it "Basic package", set the usage to "km", so that the system knows we mean kilometers and therefore mileage.

We said that it should calculate per started day (so per 24 hours).

The amount and price mean that for each 24 hours of the booking duration, the customer gets 100km and it costs 0€ per day.

The "Price per extra km" defines the price, which the customer has to pay if he exceeds the given amount.

Here we simply set it to 1€.

In reality this example would equate to:

Customer books 7 days -> He gets 700km for 0€.

If he drives 750km (so he exceeds the usage by 50km), he gets charged 50€.

You can click on "Save" to create the usage.

It will appear in the "Attached usage offers" box, with a little label marking it as "draft".

That is because usages are initially set to inactive.

To activate it, simply click on the name (here "Basic package") and you the usage details will open. There you can toggle it to be active:

Once an item (like a car) has an attached usage offer which is active, its "old usages" (if you had any set up) will be overwritten. This means that the booking widgets will recognize, that the new usages are active for this item and will behave accordingly.

In the usage details you can also specify its calculation logic and which items it should appear for.

The latter part is handled by the "Attached to" box. There you can either select a tag of items that should use this usage, or directly select an item.

The calculation logic happens in the "Pricing" box:

Here we have an example of a usage option with a price of 0€.

Usually you would have one "Basic" option that doesn't cost anything, since it's "priced in" into the cost for the rental of the car / machine and this is how it could be set up.

It behaves exactly like the normal pricing box in a normal item, but with the addition of a new column for the usage.

So you can set your usages up with the exact same logic as your normal pricing for a rental item. The same rules are used and the calculation behaves the same.

In the example from the screenshot we said that the usage is 100km per day, but when the booking duration is 7 days or longer, it's instead 150km per day.

If you wanted to create a second option (let's call it "Premium 300km per day"), you would set the usage to 300km/d and the price to 100€/d.

Such an option would look like this:

To create an option like "50 extra kilometers" from the example in the beginning of this article, you can simple set the "per duration / per item" switch to "per item" and give it an amount of kilometers and a price:

A usage item set to a price "Per item" is detected by the system as an "on-top" option and will appear in the "Book extra kilometers (optional)" section of the selection modal.

You can also create an unlimited option. For this simply set the price to Per duration and in the usage column click on the unit (in this example on km/d) and it will switch to infinite.

One such example could look like this:

With this a customer will get an unlimited amount of kilometers, costing 300€ per day.
