You will know you resize a column if you see a light gray box hanging from the line between two headers.
When you hover your mouse over the line between two columns headers you can drag to change the width of a column.
Cursor change:
You will know you are hovering over the right place when your cursor changes to a resize pointer
Double click:
If you double click on the drag spot the column will automatically expand to the size of its contents.
