Labor / Labour Category Type Explained

Understand how Labor / Labour categories work in Blackpurl and how they connect to general ledgers and labor codes.

In Blackpurl, the Labor / Labour category type is assigned to your labor codes or relevant transaction types to control how labor income and costs are mapped to your accounting package. Understanding this setup helps ensure your general ledger allocations are accurate when labor codes are used on customer orders.

How Labor / Labour Categories Work

The Labor / Labour category type controls which general ledger (GL) accounts receive income and cost of goods sold (COGS) entries when a labor code is used on a customer order. By default, Blackpurl is set up with one Labor / Labour category, but you can create additional categories for reporting purposes.

Multiple Labor / Labour categories can all point to the same GL accounts in your accounting package, or each category can be assigned different GL accounts depending on your business needs.

Each Labor / Labour category requires you to specify:

  • An Income GL — the general ledger account that receives labor income

  • A COGS GL — the general ledger account that receives the cost of goods sold for labor

Assigning a Category to a Labor Code

Once your Labor / Labour categories are configured, each category is assigned to a Labor / Labour code. This assignment determines how that code posts to your accounting package.

When a Labor / Labour code is used on a customer order, Blackpurl automatically allocates the financial entries as follows:

  • Labor income is allocated to the GL account shown in the category's Income GL field

  • Labor costs are allocated to the GL account shown in the category's COGS GL field
