Courses & Course Outlines

Learn about Courses and creating Course Outlines.

Written by Raashi Thakran

A Course in Bobbin groups related Lessons into a structured learning program. Every Lesson belongs to a Course. As a Tutor, you can see all the Courses you are assigned to teach, along with their Lessons and Course Outlines.

Note: Tutors only see the Courses they teach. Administrators see every Course in the organization.

Coming from TutorCruncher? Courses in Bobbin correspond to Jobs in TutorCruncher. When Bobbin is added to a Job, it becomes accessible here.

Viewing your Courses

From the left-hand navigation, select Courses to see every Course you are assigned to. Click any Course to open its detail page.

Note: What you can do on a Course varies. Your permission level is set per Course — some Tutors can manage a Course and its Lessons fully, others can add or edit Lessons, or only mark them complete. If an action you expect isn't available, that's why.

Course Outlines

A Course Outline gives a Course its structured plan - a set of modules, each broken down into topics that you can tick off as they are covered in Lessons.

Both Tutors and Administrators can create, edit, and manage Course Outlines.

Creating a Course Outline

  1. Open the Course from your Courses list

  2. The Course detail page opens on the Course Outline tab

  3. If no outline exists yet, you'll see two options:

    • Browse plans — choose from curriculum-aligned templates filtered by Subject, Key Stage, and Exam Board

    • Describe your own — create a free-form plan based on the Course description

Using a curriculum-aligned template

  1. Click Browse plans

  2. Use the Search, Subject, Key stage, and Exam Board filters to find the right plan

  3. Select a template from the list — a preview of its modules and topics appears on the right

  4. Click Use this template to apply it to the Course

The browser opens on the plans for your agency's country, so the Subject, Key stage and Exam Board options match that curriculum. To teach from another country's curriculum, use the Country picker to switch and the other filters update to match.

Curricula are available for England, the United States (including the ACT and SAT under Exam Boards), Ireland (Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate at Higher, Ordinary and Foundation level, plus primary maths, English and Irish) and Australia, from primary through to senior secondary.

Building your own Course plan

Choose Describe your own, tell us what the Course should cover, and AI will draft a structured plan of modules and topics. Always review each module before using it with Students.

Editing a Course Outline

Click the More button (three dots) on the Course Outline header, then select Edit. In editing mode you can:

  • Rename modules

  • Reorder modules

  • Edit module descriptions

  • Add or remove topics

  • Swap to a different template via Change template

Click Save Changes when finished, or Cancel to discard your edits.

Each Course has a single Course Outline, and your edits are made to it in place. Editing an AI-generated or template-based plan marks it as manually edited.

Careful: Regenerating a plan, or switching template with Change template, replaces the whole set of modules and topics — including anything you have edited. The same is true if a colleague regenerates it, so it's worth agreeing who is looking after an outline before making changes to it.

Outline history

Click the More button and select History to see a record of the changes made to the outline. It's there for reference — a read-only log of what changed and when, rather than something you can roll back.

Because removed modules and topics can't be brought back from here, it's worth being deliberate about what you remove. If you're unsure, editing a module's description or leaving a topic unticked is safer than deleting it.

Tracking Course coverage

Once an outline is in place, you can track progress as you teach through it.

  • Tick the checkbox next to a topic to mark it as covered. Covered topics are shown with a strikethrough.

  • The Course Coverage bar at the top updates automatically, showing the percentage of topics covered.

If your agency has the Objectives Covered panel switched on, a completed Lesson's insights also show which of these objectives that Lesson covered, grouped by module — a useful cross-check against what you've ticked off by hand.

Leaving feedback on a plan

Use the thumbs-up or thumbs-down buttons on the Course Outline header to rate the quality of the plan. A short feedback dialog will appear where you can optionally add a comment before clicking Submit feedback.

Course resources

You can attach files and folders to a Course so the material you teach from sits alongside the outline, ready to open in the Lesson. As well as your own library, you can use your agency's shared files and folders and attach those to the Courses you teach.

Inside a live Lesson, the library panel gives you the agency's shared files, the Course's files and your own library without leaving the whiteboard.

Viewing Lessons on a Course

Scroll to the Lessons section of the Course page to see all Lessons linked to that Course.

When a Lesson is created from a Course, the objectives from the outline can be pre-selected so Bobbin drafts the Lesson plan around them.
