Getting started with Bola and [DESKTOP EHR] in 4 easy steps

Written by Martha Galewski

This article covers all the things you need to know to get started with voice charting with Bola and [EHR].

Table of contents:

1. Order a microphone

Before you can start using Bola, you need a mic that can be used to speak commands and dictate notes to Bola.

  • Check out our recommended mics and order a microphone that works best for you and your budget

2. Install the Bola Voice extension

1. Download the Bola desktop app here by clicking on Click to download:

2. Open your File Explorer (manilla folder icon) and select the download folder

3. Once the file has finished downloading, double click on it to open the "Bola_Voice_Assistant" file

4. You may see this screen ("Windows protected your PC"), select More info

5. Then click Run anyway

The app will then begin installation:

6. Once the app is downloaded, you should be prompted by the Bola Desktop app to input a license key. Copy your license key given to you in your Bola Welcome Email and paste it into the license key field

Note:

A license key is your unique license for using Bola as part of your monthly or annual subscription.

No problem, we've got you covered. Contact your CSM or Support for assistance.

3. Review training resources on voice commands

In order to become a charting expert with Bola, you will first need to know the different voice commands.

1. From the desktop app, click the getting started icon at the bottom of the page above version number:

Clicking this icon should automatically open the Desktop Voice Command Cheat Sheet but you can also access it here.

4. Practice charting with Bola

Now that you have your microphone, the app is installed, and you have your cheat sheet, you are ready to start using Bola.

1. Open <EHR> and the Bola Desktop app at the same time (side-by-side)

2. In the Bola desktop app, click on Options to make sure that you have the mic you would like to use with Bola selected

Using an external microphone

We highly recommend not using your built-in microphone because this type of mic will pick up too much background noise potentially causing issues with charting.

3. Click Back (<) to return to the home screen

4. Navigate to a perio chart for a patient in <EHR> and start a new exam

4. Back in Bola, click the mic icon

5. Then, click on the first position of the first available tooth in the perio chart in <EHR> and wait for an audible ding (which indicates you are ready to start speaking)

6. Start saying measurements for pocket depths (such as "2,1,1")

Note:

Missing teeth should be automatically detected. If missing teeth need to be manually marked OR you have other types of teeth that you would like to skip such as implants, pontics, etc., please see our Missing Teeth guide here.

Congratulations! You've started charted with Voice AI in Bola! Familiarize yourself with the other voice commands to add gingival margins, bleeding, suppuration, furcation, mobility, and more.
