What is subcontracting?

Subcontracting mode in Bonsai essentially lets you use the platform backwards. It's a great tool for working as a "client" through Bonsai, and sending contracts, onboarding, and communicating with your Subcontractors/Contractors. You can even let your Subcontractors invoice you through Bonsai without them needing a subscription themselves!

Whenever a part or more of the work for a project is assigned, or outsourced, to an external party, a subcontracting relationship is established. As with any working relationship, it's a great idea to have a contract template in place.

How is subcontracting used in Bonsai?

With Bonsai's 'client' mode, you can manage all your subcontracting documents in one place:

  • Invite contractors to custom onboarding flows (with various to-do's such as connecting Stripe/PayPal, and collecting contact information).

  • Create projects with contractors that you can use to organize their invoicing, contracts, and files.

  • Create and send custom contracts to contractors.

  • View total spending across all subcontractors.

Note: Subcontracting mode is different from inviting team members to Bonsai as collaborators or partners. Subcontracting mode is completely separate from your regular projects and clients and is best for when you want to keep your relationship with your subcontractors separate from your work with your clients. If you want to add a user to a project you already have with your client, consider adding them as Collaborators.
