Having issues signing into your bank account?

Updated over a week ago

If you are experiencing issues connecting your bank account for expense tracking, it is commonly because of one of these reasons!

  1. Your login is incorrect

  2. Your bank is changing its authentication requirements (MFA)

  3. You’re not connecting a bank account supported by Plaid

Your login is incorrect

As silly as this sounds, it’s very common for users to forget that they recently changed their bank login or password. Please confirm that you're using the right credentials through your bank!

Your bank is changing its authentication requirements (MFA)

We've seen this quite a few times, as banks are always working to keep their security up to date.

Sometimes they are changing their requirements, such as deploying a new version of multi-factor authentication (MFA). In this case, all you need to do is wait until they finish their authentication changes and then you should be able to log in. Often the connection between Plaid (our partner for bank sync) and your bank is restored quickly, but occasionally the connection can be down for some time.

Other times, such as the case of Capital One, they're simply changing their policies to restrict 3rd parties from connecting to their bank accounts as an anti-competitive policy.

If you are having issues as a Capital One customer as well, please tweet at them as well using the #protectdataaccess hashtag.

Your bank is not supported

We're sorry if this is the case- we know that this is frustrating. Our banking partner (Plaid) is doing all they can to support more banks worldwide, but they are often impeded by the bank's own policies. Sometimes asking your bank (such as the tweets above) can help them move faster. Regardless, we hope that we'll support your bank in the coming future.

Using Plaid, we are currently able to support countless banks across regions like the US, UK, Canada, and more.

If you need an alternative way to bring in your expenses, consider exporting a CSV file from your bank, and uploading the CSV file from your Integrations & Data page!

If you're tracking your expenses for tax purposes, feel free to use Bonsai's self-employment tax calculator.

If you feel that your bank connection issue isn't covered by one of these common causes, please don't hesitate to reach out to the support team!
