Overview

The number of active members shows how many people had an active membership on a given day within a selected period. This information is then summarized monthly in a candlestick chart.

Step-by-step calculation

1. Retrieving Memberships

First, we will retrieve all memberships that are valid within the selected period and that belong to the selected membership types.

2. Calculating active members per day

For each day of the period, we find out how many unique members had an active membership. A person is counted as an active member if
✔️: Their membership was valid on that day (it started before or on the day and hasn't expired yet).
✔️ Their membership has lasted for at least the specified minimum number of days.

3. Monthly Data Summary

Once we have the daily numbers, we group them by month and calculate four key values for each month:

  • Open number → Number of active members on the first day of the month.

  • Close → Number of active members on the last day of the month.

  • Lowest Number (Low) → The lowest number of active members during the month.

  • High → The highest number of active members during the month.

4. Calculating averages

To provide additional insights, we also calculate:

  • The average number of active members per month

  • Median number of active members per month

Example

Let's say we calculate active members from January 1 to March 31. A person who: ✅ Started their membership on January✅
15 Has a membership that lasts 3 months (until April 15)
✅ Meets the minimum duration requirement

Will be counted as an active member every day from January 15 to March 31.

At the end of each month, we summarize the number of active members and display it in a candlestick chart.
