Credit bureaus have a process in place to either close or delete rent reporting tradelines if there is inactivity (no rent payments reported) for a certain period of time. Whether the tradeline is closed or deleted depends on the number of on-time payments the credit bureaus received prior to the start of the inactivity.
Experian
Closed
If Experian received rent payment data for 3 or more payments prior to the start of inactivity, then they will close the tradeline
Deleted
If Experian received rent payment data for less than 3 payments prior to the start of inactivity, then they will delete the tradeline
Transunion
Deleted
If Transunion does not receive updated rent payment data for 180 days, then they will delete the tradeline
Equifax
Equifax does not close or delete tradelines based on inactivity
