Customizing Your Website

We've custom-built tools in the back-end of WordPress to allow you to quickly and easily customize parts of your website. Click on each section below for step-by-step instructions on customizing these areas of your site.

Homepage Background Image

Depending upon the theme, your team's company website may have a banner photo along the top -- referred to as the homepage background image. This image is generally provided or selected by the Broker/Owner during the initial implementation of your BoomTown website, but can be changed in the future if needed!

Consistency is better here -- we recommend keeping your homepage background image the same to keep your branding consistent. Changing your homepage background image can cause confusion for leads who are returning to the site.

As a Broker/Admin user, if you would like to move forward with making a change to the homepage background image on your website, you can do so within the WordPress console -- by selecting the Customize Website option within the Tools tab of your left-hand menu bar.

You'll be taken to a page where you'll need to select another button to Customize Website on the Homepage Customizer tile, and this should open your WordPress console.

From here you'll be taken to another page, where you can select the Homepage Settings choice.

On the page that displays, you should see the current homepage background image, as well as a preview version of your site to the right. To make a change, select the Change Image button beneath the current image on the sidebar. If you don't see an image, and instead see a blank outline, choose the Select Image button to choose one that you'd like!

If you'd prefer to remove your image altogether, and just have a blank background for your website, feel free to select the check box above the Home Background area of the page, where its says, Display a blank background instead of the theme's background image, and then Publish the changes!

A pop-up window will display with the files included in your WordPress Media Library -- you can select an existing image, or you can upload a new one.

Keep in mind that the image you're selecting or uploading:

  • Must be a high-quality image, that is at least 2000 x 700 pixels in size.

  • Cannot contain your company's logo -- as this will need to be a separate file that is changed by our Support Team.

  • Should not include any text or images of people, as this may not render as desired during the image addition process.

  • Should be landscape-oriented, if possible.

When selecting an image for your homepage, avoid using any images taken from the internet -- unless you've purchased the license to the image from a reputable image-sharing website, or you have explicit rights or permission to use it.

Once you've uploaded or chosen the image you'd like to use, click on the Choose Image button on the image selection page. This should then show a preview of the way the image will appear on your website.

If the image selected is not large enough, an error message will display within the left-hand menu bar, alerting you to ensure you select a new image with the correct sizing!

If you have the correct image size, and you're happy with the rendering displayed, you can go ahead and publish the changes to your website live, by selecting the Publish button in the top, right-hand corner of the left-hand menu bar!

Please note that changes to the Homepage Image on the main company domain will also reflect on all Agent sub-domains, and there's not a way to customize the information shown on the menu for just the sub-domains.

If you would like to add a homepage background video to your site, click here for more information on how to do this.

Homepage Background Video

Depending upon the theme your site is set on, your company website may have a banner photo or video along the top -- referred to as the homepage background image. This image is provided or selected during initial implementation of your BoomTown website, but can now be updated to a video!

Please Note: Only videos hosted on YouTube are compatible with your homepage video.

Uploading your Video to YouTube

As a Broker/Admin user, if you would like to upload a video as your background image on your site, you’ll first want to upload a public video to YouTube.

To upload a public video to YouTube once you’re logged into your YouTube account, select the video camera button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen and then select “Upload Video” from the drop-down menu that appears.

Please Note: Videos cannot be monetized.

On the next screen that appears, click the Select Files option to choose your file and upload it to YouTube.

From here you can follow the prompts by clicking Next while your video is being processed to customize the upload.

In the last section called Visibility, select the Public option and then Publish in the bottom right to finish the upload.

On the page that populates, select the three vertical dots icon to pull up the options menu.

In the menu, click on Get sharable link. This will automatically copy the link to your video into your clipboard!

Uploading your Video to BoomTown

Once you copy the URL provided within your YouTube account, navigate to your BoomTown CRM. Select Customize Website under the Tools tab on your left-side navigation.

You'll be taken to a page we're you'll need to select another button to Customize Website on the Homepage Customizer tile, and this should open your WordPress console.

From here you'll be redirected to the Site Editor, where you can select the Homepage Settings choice.

On the next panel, choose Homepage Background Settings.

Paste the YouTube URL in the field labeled Background video and a preview of your video will appear in the right screen.

Video adjustment options will appear once a link has been added into this field. You will have the option to adjust the tone and brightness of your video.

Please Note: the default brightness is set to 5%, before adjusting the brightness of your video ensure your device is not set to low brightness.

When you have the preferred tone and brightness on your video, select the 'Publish' button in the top right of the panel to publish the video.

In the bottom right corner of your editor, you will be able to toggle to view your site in Desktop view, Tablet View, and Mobile view (from left to right).

Helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • There is no sound on the video.

  • The video will automatically be stretched to avoid "Related Videos" and the "YouTube" logo from appearing.

  • There is no way to pause the video.

  • The video will play in a loop automatically.

  • There is no limit on the length of the video.

  • The video will only display on the desktop version of your site (the mobile & tablet version of your site will display background image)

    • Why? Mobile and tablet screens are too small to display the entire video & for optimized performance

  • If video is unavailable for any reason, the background image will be displayed.

  • Opacity defaults to 30%, but can be turned off by setting to 0% and maxes out at 80%.

A pop-up window will display with the files included in your WordPress Media Library -- you can select an existing image, or you can upload a new one.

Supported Plugins

While WordPress does allow for more customization using plugins, we are not always able to add a plugin as it may interfere with our code. The list below is plugins that our developers have approved and are currently available to all users:

If you would like to request a plugin that is not listed above, please submit the plugin information as an idea in our Feedback Forum. Our Products Team will review the requests submitted for possible implementation.

When submitting these requests, please provide us with some information about what the plugin would accomplish for your needs, as these requests can oftentimes inform product feature changes moving forward!

Company Logos

On your team's company website, there is a company logo included at the top of the page along the menu bar. This company logo is generally provided by a Broker/Owner during the initial implementation of your BoomTown website but can be changed in the future if needed.

Consistency is better here -- we recommend keeping your logo the same to keep your branding consistent. Changing your logo can cause confusion for leads who are returning to the site.

IMPORTANT: When placing company logos on websites, we are subject to each MLS's compliance and regulations. Some MLSs will only allow the brokerage logo, some only the company logo, and some require both. This will be dependent on the MLS and we are unable to place a company logo on a website that is not compliant.

As a Broker/Admin user, if you would like to move forward with making a change to the company logo on your website, please select the option to contact our Support Team, and provide us with:

  • A 1200x400 pixel vector file (eps, .ai file types)

  • If you do not have access to a vector file, please provide a 1200x400 pixel .PNG file with transparency.*

*If you would like to have us create the company logo for you, or if the logo file is too small for use, there will be a fee associated with the redesign.

Once we receive your request, our Support Team will be happy to get those changes taken care of and follow up with confirmation!

Please note that changes to the company logo on the main company domain will also reflect on all Agent sub-domains, and there's no way to customize the information shown on the menu for just the sub-domains.

Chat Widgets

Many of our clients choose to subscribe to and use an external chat widget provided by a third-party company in order to display a chat feature for visitors to their BoomTown website.

Our Support Team is happy to help with implementing such a chat widget on your website for you!

All we need in order to add the widget is a plain text document containing the HTML code provided to you by the third-party company powering the chat functionality.

Here is a list of all the chat widget services that are compatible with our websites and can be requested to be added by our Support Team. If you're not seeing the chat widget service you were hoping to use, please add it to the Consumer Website section of our Product Ideas Forum or vote on an existing request.

If you'd like to move forward with any of the widgets provided by the companies below, please feel free to reach out to the companies directly to start your service with them!

Please keep in mind that chat widgets may affect the performance of your paid advertising efforts depending upon the method and frequency at which the widget/chat box populates on the site.

Company Address

On your team's website, there are a few places that display your company's mailing or physical address by default.

The first is to the very right-hand side of the footer section of the website, in the About Us box.

The second location that displays your company address is on the Contact Us page along the sidebar.

This address information is generally provided by a Broker/Owner during the initial implementation of your BoomTown website but can be changed in the future if needed.

As a Broker/Admin user, if you'd like to make additions or changes to the company address information in either location, please select the option to contact our Support Team, and provide us with:

  • The full new address and/or phone number that you'd like to have displayed

  • If you'd only like the address updated in one location, please let us know which specifically

Once we receive your request, our Support Team will be happy to get those changes taken care of and follow up with confirmation!

Please note that changes to the company address information on the main company domain will also reflect on all Agent sub-domains, and there's no way to customize the information shown on the menu for just the sub-domains.

Custom Areas

Custom Areas are locations selected by the Broker/Owner of your website and added by BoomTown, usually during the Implementation process, that can display in the drop-down of the search bar on your website when selected.

This will allow you to customize the areas that display, and drive traffic to certain parts of your MLS that you service or would like to highlight! It can be used to narrow the list of available search options, while at the same time, all listings from all areas in the MLS will still be available on your website.

After your Custom Areas are created by BoomTown, that custom list will display when a visitor clicks on the search bar on your site. As a visitor starts typing in the search bar, the site will look for a match to your Custom Area list first.

Custom Areas are typically used for location data (e.g., area, city, county, postal code, etc.), however any search option found on your website (e.g., Gated Communities, Foreclosures, List Price, etc.) may be included. You're also welcome to combine search criteria into a Custom Area. If you can search for it, then you can create a custom area for it!

Custom Areas can also include polygonal map searches performed on the site! However, it's important to note that attempting to view two Custom Areas that were created with the polygonal searches will lead to the results not displaying correctly as only one map can be utilized at a time.

If you'd like to edit, add, or remove Custom Areas from your list, please reach out to our Support Team, and provide us with:

  • The full URL for the search you'd like to have displayed for each Custom Area

  • The title of the corresponding Custom Areas

  • The order you'd like the Custom Areas to display on the menu bar

Once we receive your request, our Support Team will be happy to get those changes taken care of and follow up with confirmation!

Hawkeye Theme Homepage Portholes

If your team's website is utilizing the Hawkeye theme, there are three circles included on the homepage by default, that allow you to highlight certain information and route visitors to pages associated with those callouts!

As a Broker/Admin user, if you would like to make a change to any of the verbiage, images, or links within your website's porthole images, you can do so within the WordPress console -- by selecting the Customize Website option within the Tools tab of your left-hand menu bar.

You'll be taken to a page where you'll need to select another button to Customize Website on the Homepage Customizer tile, and this should open your WordPress console.

From here you'll be taken to another page, where you can select the Widgets choice.

Then select the option for Homepage Widgets, and on the next page, the choice for BoomTown Portholes Widget.

Within this drop-down menu will be all the current porthole settings for your team's website (ordered from top to bottom, and meant to reflect the order on the site from left to right).

You can change the following information for each of the three portholes on the site:

Image URL

This is the image that displays in the background of the porthole -- you can click the Select or Upload an Image button beneath this to search your photos and upload a new one. This will automatically populate the image URL when selected!

When selecting images for your portholes, avoid using any images taken from the internet -- unless you've purchased the license to the image from a reputable image-sharing website, or you have explicit rights or permission for using it.

Title

The header associated with the porthole is meant to describe what the link and image relate to -- shown as Contact Us in the example above.

Subtitle

The verbiage beneath the porthole title, shown in a muted grey color describes the porthole link in a bit more detail -- shown as a Large photo, sidebar of properties in the example above.

Button Text

Displays when the visitor hovers over the porthole, and shows as See All Listings in the example above.

Button URL

This is where the See All Listings button in the example above will direct to -- be sure to include the full URL with http:// or https:// when adding the link here!

As you make changes to each porthole on the sidebar, you should see the updated information displayed to the right in a preview version of your site. Once you're happy with the rendering displayed, you can go ahead and publish the changes to your website live, by selecting the Publish button in the top, right-hand corner of the left-hand menu bar!

Please note that changes to the homepage portholes on the main company domain will also reflect on all Agent subdomains, and there's no way to customize the information shown here for just the subdomains. There is however a way to disable these from showing on Agent subdomains entirely. If you'd like for the portholes to ONLY display on your team's overall company website, and not also be included above an Agent's bio information on their subdomain, feel free to select the check box beneath the composition window for Disable on agent subdomains.

Below is the list of social media icons that we currently support and are able to add to the footer of your site:

  • ActiveRain

  • Facebook

  • Flickr

  • Twitter

  • YouTube

If you'd like to make additions or changes to the Get Social area of your website, please select the option to contact our Support Team, and provide us with:

  • The full URL for each of the social media icons you'd like to add or change.

Once we receive your request, our Support Team is happy to get those changes taken care of and follow up with confirmation!

Please note that changes to the footer section of the main team domain will also reflect on all Agent sub-domains, and there's no way to customize the information shown in the footer for just the sub-domains.

Top Areas & Neighborhoods

On the homepage of your website, you'll have a section displaying your Top Areas & Neighborhoods, so that you can drive traffic to the areas you and your team most often service!

In order to make changes to the Top Areas & Neighborhoods section of your website, the changes will first need to be made in the Guides area of your WordPress console.

Then, by making updates to the Guide Pages, and the Guide Page order, those updates will automatically be reflected in the Top Areas & Neighborhoods section (unless indicated otherwise).

The search you enter for each Guide will also pull in under the Top Areas & Neighborhoods and display as the numbered bubble alongside each title.

Additionally, you'll be able to indicate how you'd like each Guide Page (and subsequent Top Area & Neighborhood) to be titled on the site.

For more detailed information about creating and updating your Guide Pages, check out our Guide Pages article!

Top Navigation Menu

On your website, there is a top navigation menu that displays additional pages for the site and makes them easily accessible to visitors. The appearance of the menu will differ depending on which website theme you have, however, the functionality will be the same for each.

This top navigation can be ordered according to your team's needs -- and there's an option to have a drop-down menu added beneath the menu items to create a sub-menu for each.

The menu items can link to pages within your BoomTown site, and can also link to outside sites-- such as an external review page.

If you'd like to make additions or changes to the menu bar for your team's website, as a Broker/Admin user you can do so within the WordPress console -- by selecting the Customize Website option within the Tools tab of your left-hand menu bar.

You'll be taken to a page where you'll need to select another button to Customize Website on the Homepage Customizer tile, and this should open your WordPress console.

From here you'll be taken to another page, where you can select the Menus choice.

On the next page, select the Main Menu option.

You'll be directed to a page that displays all of the current menu items and sub-menu items for your team's website (ordered from top to bottom, and meant to reflect the order on the site from left to right).

Update or Remove Existing Menu Items

In order to update an existing menu item, simply navigate to it in the list that's displayed, and select the down arrow button on the right-hand side of the menu item.

This will expand the details about that menu link, so that you can make edits to the title, the URL where it directs, and the title attribute (should you wish to include this).

You can also elect to remove a menu item here, by selecting the Remove hyperlink beneath the details.

If you're updating the URL for a page within your BoomTown website, you don't have to include the entire URL within the menu item, and instead can include the details after the / in the URL.

For example, if the page you're trying to link is for the URL https://www.cobblestonegroup.com/resources/ -- you can include just the details after the --.com/ in the address, displaying like /resources/ as in the screenshot below.

If you're linking to an external website, be sure to add the entire URL for the website within the menu item, including the http:// or https://.

Menu items with links to external websites will automatically be set to open in a new tab in a visitor's browser when clicked, ensuring that they aren't navigating away from your BoomTown website!

Once you've made the changes that you'd like, select the Publish button at the top of the left-hand menu bar to complete the updates!

Add New Menu Items

To add a new menu item to your team's top navigation menu, scroll to the bottom of the list of current items, and select the + Add Items button.

This will take you to a page where you can choose how you'd like to add the menu -- from an existing Page, Guide, Blog, etc. on your website, or from a custom link (that can be either internal to the website, or external).

Selecting the arrow next to each section will expand it to make changes accord to your preferences.

If you select the choice for Custom Links, you'll be able to enter a link and the title you'd like to have display for the menu item associated with the link.

If you're adding a custom link for a page within your BoomTown website, you don't have to include the entire URL within the menu item, and instead can include the details after the / in the URL.

For example, if the page you're trying to link is for the URL https://www.cobblestonegroup.com/resources/ -- you can include just the details after the --.com/ in the address, displaying like /resources/

If you're linking to an external website, be sure to add the entire URL for the website within the menu item, including the http:// or https://.

Menu items with links to external websites will automatically be set to open in a new tab in a visitor's browser when clicked, ensuring that they aren't navigating away from your BoomTown website!

When you've made the changes that you'd like, select the Add to Menu button, and then make sure to publish the changes overall!

When adding new menu items, you will be able to add more than your site will be able to display, so be conscious of how the menu bar is updating in the preview menu of your site (located on the right) as you go, to ensure you're not adding too many menus! You can always nest menu items within one another to create sub-menus if needed!

Reorder Menu Items

If you'd like to change the order of the menu tabs on your team's website or nest certain tabs within one another to create sub-menus, this can be done two ways!

The first is to drag and drop the items into the order that you'd like. As you're moving the menu items, WordPress will automatically display a grey dotted outline of where the item would fall if dropped. You can put them in line with other menu items, or move them to the right to nest them as sub-menus.

The second way to change the order of the menu items is by selecting the Reorder button at the bottom of the menu list.

This will then populate the items with up & down and left & right arrows -- allowing you to move the menu item accordingly! To nest or un-nest one, simply utilize the left & right arrow buttons.

Once you've made the changes that you'd like, select the Done button.

Then, make sure that for either approach you click on the Publish button at the top of the left-hand menu panel at the end, to make the changes appear live on your team's website!

You will only be able to create one layer of nesting with menus on the website, to create a sub-menu. There is no option to create a sub-menu within a sub-menu at this time, so please be advised when reordering menu items!

Please note that changes to the top navigation menu on the main team domain will also reflect on all Agent sub-domains, and there's not a way to customize the information shown on the menu for just the sub-domains.
