How to Schedule a Triangular or Quadrangular

This guide covers how to set up a triangular (3-team) or quadrangular (4-team) event in Bound. The setup depends on how your sport scores.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

For school admins who schedule events in Bound.

Important: You need scheduling permissions for your school to create events and add competitions.

Triangular or Quadrangular Scoring Format

H2H-scored sports (volleyball, wrestling, tennis, swimming) play separate matches between each pair of teams. You’ll create the event first, then add each head-to-head competition to it.

Meet-scored sports (cross country, track & field, golf, swimming) compete together as a field with one set of results. You just create one event — no extra competitions to add.

Tip: Some sports can go either way.

Bowling — If your conference scores by total pins across the field, use the meet-scored setup. If teams earn points per game won against each pair, use H2H-scored.

Swimming & Diving — If all teams are ranked together, use meet-scored. If your conference scores it as simultaneous dual meets between each pair, use H2H-scored.

H2H-Scored: Create the Placeholder Event (optional)

Important: This step isn't necessary if you already know the competition schedule. If you don't need a placeholder event, create a new H2H School Competition Event, then go into that event to add the remaining competitions (see next section H2H-Scored: Add the Head-to-Head Competitions)

Start by creating the event so it gets on everyone’s calendar. At this point you may not know the match schedule yet — pool play hasn’t been set, or the match order hasn’t been decided. The placeholder gets the event on every team’s calendar without needing those details.

1. Click Events in the left sidebar, then click + Add Event in the top-right corner.

2. Under Add Hosted Tournament Event, click + Add Event (Teams are known, Schedule is not ready).

3. Select your activity (e.g., Volleyball), fill in the title (e.g., “Bounders Triangular”), date, time, and location, add the participating teams, and save.

Important: For bowling, select “Triangular” from the Bowling Match Format dropdown when creating the event.

H2H-Scored: Add the Head-to-Head Competitions

Once you know the matchups, go back to the event and add each head-to-head competition. Each competition represents a specific pairing (e.g., Team A vs. Team B) and is where actual scores get recorded.

1. Go to Events and find your tri/quad on the calendar.

2. On the event row, click the green flag button to open the dropdown, then click + Add. On the following page click +Add Competition.

3. Fill in the matchup (Away vs. Home) and save. Repeat for each pairing.

Tip: All competitions live within the same event. Your calendar shows one event for the whole tri/quad — the individual matchups are competitions inside it. Nothing shows up as a separate event on the calendar.

Meet-Scored: Create the Event

For meet-scored sports, you just need one event with one competition. All teams compete together — no individual matchups to add.

1. Click Events+ Add Event+ Add Event under School Competition Event, then select your team (e.g., Varsity Cross Country).

2. Fill in the event details, add all participating teams, set the date/time/location, and click Create Match.

FAQ

What’s the difference between an event and a competition?

The event is the overall tri/quad (e.g., “Bounders Quadrangular”) — it’s what shows on the calendar. Competitions are the individual matchups or meets inside it. For H2H-scored sports, the placeholder event plus each head-to-head competition all live within the same event.

Why do I create the event before the matchups are ready?

The placeholder event gets the tri/quad on every participating team’s calendar right away. You can add the actual head-to-head competitions later once the match schedule is set — pool play, match order, etc.

My sport can be scored either way — which setup do I use?

Bowling and swimming can go either way depending on your conference. If teams are ranked against the whole field (total pins, combined times), use meet-scored. If teams play/score against each pair individually, use H2H-scored. Ask your conference if you’re unsure.

Do I need to have a placeholder event?

No, a placeholder event is optional and just meant to represent the event on your schedule and the other participant's schedules. If you don't need a placeholder event, create a new H2H School Competition Event, then go into that event to add the remaining competitions (see H2H-Scored: Add the Head-to-Head Competitions).
