Customizing Discovery: The Recommended Content Widget

Set up your Recommended Content Widget

Written by Breakthrough Team

The Recommended Content widget displays a personalized content list on the user's Home screen based on the answers they select during onboarding. It uses the tags assigned to their answers to filter matching media and automatically skips any content they've already completed, keeping recommendations fresh.

Step 1: Set Up Search Tags

Before assigning tags to onboarding answers, you'll need to create the tags themselves and make sure your content is tagged (if you haven't already). Learn more about setting up Search Tags here.

  1. Go to Features → Search Tags.

  2. Add the tags you want available for use across onboarding and content tagging.

💡 AI Prompt for Generating Tags: "Act as an app content strategist. I am building a wellness app with the following focus: [Insert App Description]. Please generate a list of 15-20 search tags organized into specific categories (e.g., Focus, Difficulty, Style, Target Area, and Duration). I will use these exact tags to organize my media library and power my app's Smart Search and personalized recommendation engine."

Note: Your content also needs to be tagged for the widget to surface anything. If your library isn't already tagged, go to Content → Library → Edit Classes and apply the relevant search tags to each piece of content.

Step 2: Add Tags to Onboarding Answers

Important: You must complete this step before enabling the widget. If onboarding answers aren't tagged, the system will show a warning and block you from turning the widget on.

Go to Setup & Customization → App Settings → Onboarding.

  1. Attach the relevant search tags to each onboarding answer. You can also preview what results a specific answer will yield from here.

💡 AI Prompt for Onboarding Questions & Tag Mapping: "Act as an app onboarding specialist. Using the tags we just created, write 3 to 5 multiple-choice onboarding questions to learn about my new users' goals. Users must only be able to select a single choice per question (e.g., 'How long do you like to practice? A) 10 mins, B) 20 mins'). For every answer option, list the exact search tags I should attach so the app can automatically recommend the perfect content."

Step 3: Configure the Widget

  1. Go to Setup & Customization → Widget Manager → Home Screen.

  2. Toggle on the Recommended Content widget and place it in your desired order.

  3. Customize the following settings:

    • Title: Name the section (e.g., "Recommended For You").

    • Empty State: Set the title and button text shown when a user has no matching or unplayed media. The button will direct them to the Update Preferences page to change their answers.

    • Thumbnail Size: Choose the visual size of the content tiles.

    • Content Rules: Select which media types to include (Classes, Routines, Audio, etc.) and manually exclude any specific content you want to hide.
