What is PSHE and how does it appear in university applications?

A guide for BridgeU advisors and students on what PSHE is, how universities use it in admissions and how to record or discuss PSHE in the context of applications.

What is PSHE?

PSHE stands for Personal, Social, Health and Economic education. It is a non-examined subject taught in many UK schools that covers life skills such as health and wellbeing, relationships, financial literacy and citizenship. Unlike academic subjects such as Maths or English, PSHE does not produce a formal qualification or grade that appears on a UCAS application.

Because PSHE is not an examined subject, it will not appear in a student's academic grades or subject list in BridgeU.

Does PSHE matter for university admissions?

Universities in the UK and internationally do not typically request or evaluate PSHE as part of their entry requirements. Admissions decisions are based on examined subjects such as A-Levels, IB Diploma subjects, GCSEs or equivalent qualifications.

However, the skills and topics covered in PSHE such as community involvement, health awareness, and ethical thinking can be highly relevant when students write their personal statement or prepare for interviews. Advisors can encourage students to reflect on their PSHE learning when describing extracurricular activities, values or personal development.

FAQs

Can I add PSHE as a subject in BridgeU?

No, BridgeU's subject fields are intended for examined, graded academic subjects. PSHE does not produce a grade or qualification, so it cannot be added as a subject. If you need to note a student's PSHE involvement, use the notes field in the student's profile or record relevant activities in the extracurriculars section.

A university is asking about PSHE — what does this mean?

Some UK universities, particularly those with strong programmes in healthcare, education, or social sciences, may reference PSHE in their outreach materials or open day talks. This is typically to explain the breadth of a student's learning environment, not to request a PSHE grade. If a student is concerned about a specific university's requirements, they should contact the admissions office of that institution directly for clarification. You can find contact details on the university's profile page in BridgeU.

Where can I find more guidance for UK applications?

For general guidance on UK university applications and UCAS, see the related articles in the BridgeU help centre under the UCAS and Document Sending sections. For questions about specific university requirements, use the university profile pages within BridgeU or contact the university's admissions team directly.

How should I handle PSHE in BridgeU?

  • PSHE not showing in grades: This is correct. PSHE is not a graded subject and does not appear in the academic profile.

  • PSHE in personal statements: Students can describe experiences or values developed through PSHE in their personal statement on UCAS or Common App, even though it is not listed as a subject.

  • PSHE and extracurriculars: If a student has taken on a specific role related to PSHE topics such as a mental health ambassador or a peer mentor this can be recorded in the extracurricular or activities section of BridgeU.
