Messaging App only

Brightwheel was created to streamline your parent communication. We have many updates to come around parent messaging. All messages are sent through the app and we do not use email.

In the future we hope to enable opportunities for newsletters and more two-way communication. Please note that messaging is a Premium feature.

Teacher to Parent Messaging

For daily updates, we still recommend using the notes feature. However, if you would like to send a message, alert, or reminder to a room or specific parent, you can use the messaging feature. For more detailed instructions, view the help article here.

Teachers can send messages to entire rooms, or to specific parents. Here's how:

  1. Click the Message icon (bottom left on iOS, top tab on Android)
  2. Select the Edit Message icon (top right)
  3. Choose the students of whose parents you would like to message
  4. Select Message, Alert, or Reminder
  5. Type the message and send.

Parents will receive the message in their inbox on the App. They will need the App to access these messages.

Note

  • Parents can not directly respond to your message.
  • Since we don't offer an email option, some teachers use the photos and notes features to send out shorter weekly newsletters.

Parents to Teacher Messaging

Parents can send a message with a character limit to teachers. This is a premium feature within the mobile app, not the web portal. Here's how:

  1. Click the Child’s Profile
  2. Click Message icon under the child's profile picture in iOS, top righ-hand corner on Android
  3. Click the Message icon in the top right corner
  4. Select General, Late Drop Off, Late Pick Up, Early Pick Up, Not Coming in Today
  5. Add a note and send

Mass Messaging

You can also message all of your parents at once with our Message All Parents feature. This is perfect for announcing school closures, events, etc.

  1. Click on the menu icon (three horizontal lines)
  2. Click on Admin Tools
  3. Click Message All Parents
  4. Select the room(s) you want to message, or select all (top right) to message all parents
  5. Select Message, Alert, or Reminder
  6. Type the message and send.

Parents will receive the message in their inbox on the app, or if you've chosen an SMS Alert, the message will be delivered to the phone number on file.

Note

  • Even parents that have not activated their brightwheel account will receive mass message texts*, so this is a great way to send a personalized message inviting your parents to the brightwheel platform.
  • Only parents whom you've added with cell phone numbers will receive text messages.

SMS Messaging

You can now send text messages to all of your parents at once (or by room) through our premium Messaging feature. You may want to send a text in urgent or emergency situations. Or, you may want all the parents on your roster to receive an alert, even if they don't have the brightwheel app yet. When you use this feature, any parent with a phone number stored in the app will receive an SMS message to their phone.

This can be done from our Message all Parents feature within the Admin Tools, as well as within our Messaging feature in the app.

From the main menu in the app:

  1. Click Message all Parents
  2. Select the speech bubble icon (top right)
  3. Select the room(s) you want to message, or select all (top right) to message all parents
  4. Select Alert
  5. Toggle on "Send SMS Message"
  6. Type the message and send

Parents will receive a text message. They can respond by logging into the app and sending a message. If they try to respond via text instead, they will receive a text back letting them know that they cannot text back, but can message you by logging into the app and sending a message.

Note

  • SMS text messages have a 300 character limit
