Why You Won’t Always See 900 Mbps Over Wi-Fi
Even with our blazing-fast 900 Mbps package, Wi-Fi speeds can vary. Environmental factors and device limitations mean you’ll sometimes see lower numbers. Here’s what’s going on—and how to get the most from your connection.
For the Fastest, Most Reliable Connection
Plug a CAT6 (or higher) Ethernet cable directly into your Eero router. Wired is always stronger and more consistent than wireless.
What Affects Your Wi-Fi Speed?
Distance from the Router
The closer you are, the stronger the signal. Move further away and the speed will drop—especially in rooms at the far end of your home.Walls and Building Materials
Wi-Fi passes through walls, but each barrier chips away at your signal. Multiple solid walls (brick, concrete) cause the biggest slow-downs.Number of Connected Devices
Every device shares the same bandwidth. The more gadgets streaming, gaming or downloading at once, the more each device’s top speed is reduced.Your Device’s Wi-Fi Capability
Older laptops, phones or tablets often only support lower Wi-Fi standards—so they can’t reach the full 900 Mbps even under perfect conditions.
What Speeds Can You Realistically Expect?
Right Next to the Router (5 GHz Band)
If your device supports 5 GHz and you’re in the same room, you could see speeds approaching 900 Mbps—provided no other factor gets in the way.Further Away (2.4 GHz Band)
At longer distances or through multiple walls, devices will often switch to the 2.4 GHz band. That reaches further, but tops out around 100–200 Mbps.
Heads-up: Some gadgets default to 2.4 GHz like the PS4 and PS5 even when 5 GHz is available. Check your device’s Wi-Fi settings if you’re expecting faster speeds.
Top Tips for Better Wi-Fi
Re-Position Your Router
Aim for a central, elevated spot away from thick walls and large metal objects.Limit Interference
Keep your Eero at least 30 cm from microwaves, cordless phones or Bluetooth speakers.Upgrade Your Kit
If you need blanket coverage, add an Eero Beacon or a second node to create a true mesh network.Use Wired Where It Counts
For gaming, 4K streaming or work-from-home setups, Ethernet is unbeatable.
By understanding the limits of Wi-Fi—and tweaking your setup—you’ll get the fastest, most reliable performance possible. If you’re still not hitting what you expect, our support team is on hand to help!
