"Invalid email address" — what it means and how to fix it

Seeing an "Invalid email address" error? Here's what causes it and how to fix it in seconds.

Seeing an "Invalid email address" error? It usually means the email contains a character, space, or typo that email systems don't accept. It's quick to fix — here's how. ✅

Check these first 🔍

The most common causes are small and easy to miss:

  • Spaces before or after the email — this often happens when copy-pasting

  • Accented letters — é, ü, ç, à, etc. aren't allowed in email addresses

  • A typo — a missing @, a double dot (..), or a missing part like ".com"

  • Special characters — such as ( ) < > , ; : " [ ] | % &

💡 Tip: If you pasted the email, try typing it out manually instead — this removes any invisible spaces or hidden characters.

Which characters are allowed?

Email standards only accept:

  • Letters a–z (no accents)

  • Numbers 0–9

  • Dots ( . ), hyphens ( - ), underscores ( _ ), and plus signs ( + )

Anything else — including spaces — will trigger the "Invalid email address" error.

How to fix it 🛠️

  1. Retype the email address manually, checking for the issues above

  2. If you're updating a member's profile, you can follow the steps in Add a new email address

  3. Try saving again — the error should be gone
