Chapter 1: What Is a Hackathon?
And why you should absolutely try one
Let's start with what a hackathon is not. It's not a competition reserved for elite programmers who code in the dark while surviving on energy drinks. It's not a test you can fail. And it's definitely not something you need years of experience to enjoy.
A hackathon is a time-boxed event — usually one to three days — where people come together to build something. A prototype, a proof of concept, a working demo, sometimes a whole product. You work in a small team, pick a problem, and try to solve it before time runs out. Then you show what you built.
That's it. Everything else is flavour.
Why hackathons exist
Hackathons started in the tech world, but they've spread far beyond it. Companies use them to spark innovation. Universities use them to teach collaboration. Nonprofits use them to solve social problems. Governments use them to improve public services.
The format works because it strips away the noise. There are no endless meetings, no approval chains, no "let's circle back next quarter." You have a problem, a team, and a deadline. The constraints force creativity.
Some of the products you use every day started as hackathon projects. Facebook's "Like" button, Slack's original prototype, parts of Twitter — all born from hackathons. But the magic isn't just about what gets built. It's about what happens to the people who build it.
What you actually get out of it
New skills, fast. There's no better way to learn a technology than to use it under pressure with people who know it. You'll learn more in a weekend hackathon than in a month of tutorials.
A portfolio piece. Whether you're a student, career-changer, or experienced professional, a working demo speaks louder than a CV line. "I built this in 24 hours" is a conversation starter in any interview.
A network. You'll meet people who are curious, energetic, and willing to teach. Many hackathon teams become co-founders, colleagues, or lifelong friends. Research on the worldwide startup network shows that your position in professional networks — who you know and who they know — is one of the strongest predictors of long-term success (Bonaventura et al., 2019, Scientific Reports). Hackathons are one of the fastest ways to build those connections.
Confidence. Finishing something — anything — in a short window proves to yourself that you can ship. That confidence compounds.
Fun. Honestly, hackathons are just a good time. The energy, the camaraderie, the demos at the end — there's nothing quite like it.

The best hackathon teams are diverse — not just in technical skill, but in how people think, what they've experienced, and what they're good at. A team of five developers will build something technically impressive that nobody can explain. A team with a designer, a storyteller, a domain expert, and two developers will build something that works and wins.
Here's what non-technical participants bring:
Designers make the difference between a prototype that looks like a grey spreadsheet and one that feels like a real product. User experience matters in demos — more than most people think.
Domain experts bring the "why." If the hackathon theme is healthcare, having a nurse on your team means you're solving a real problem, not an imagined one. If it's sustainability, an environmental scientist will spot the opportunities that engineers miss.
Business and strategy thinkers help teams scope realistically, think about who the user is, and structure a compelling pitch. Judges notice when a team has thought beyond the code.
Communicators and storytellers are often the reason a team wins. The demo is the moment of truth, and the team that tells the best story — problem, solution, impact — usually beats the team with the most features.
Project managers keep the team on track. Someone who can say "we have four hours left, let's cut feature three and polish what we have" is worth their weight in gold.
Research backs this up. A large-scale study of over 21,000 startups found that teams with diverse personality types had eight to ten times higher chances of success than solo founders (McCarthy et al., 2023, Nature Scientific Reports). The same principle applies at hackathons: the more perspectives around the table, the better the outcome.
Who goes to hackathons?
Everyone. Students, professionals, career-changers, retirees, curious beginners, seasoned builders. The best hackathons attract a mix, and that mix is what makes them great.
