GitHub: getting into your team repository

For builders: how to get access to your team's private GitHub repository when an event uses the GitHub integration.

Written by Ahmed Tamer

Some events give every team a private GitHub repository. The organizer connects their GitHub organization, and BuilderBase creates one repository per team inside it. Your team works and submits there.

If your event doesn't use the GitHub integration, there's no team repository. Put the link to your own repository in your team's submission instead.

How to get access

There are two steps, and both are yours.

  1. Add your GitHub username. Open your event, go to My Team, and find the Your team repository card. Type your GitHub username (for example octocat) and press Save and get access. You can also add it on your profile: Profile → Edit → GitHub. Either way it's saved to your profile, and you're added to your team's repository straight away.

  2. Accept the invite on GitHub. GitHub sends an invite to join the organizer's GitHub organization. It goes to the email address on your GitHub account, which may not be the one you use on BuilderBase. Sign in to GitHub with that account and press Accept invite on the card. You can also open github.com/orgs/<organization>/invitation.

Once you accept, you can push to your team's repository. Every member of the team gets the same access. The team leader is also a maintainer of the team on GitHub.

What to do

Add your GitHub

Your profile has no GitHub username, so you can't be invited.

Type your username in the card and press Save and get access.

Not invited yet

You have a GitHub username, but no invite went out (for example, you joined the team late or your invite expired).

Press Get access.

Accept your invite

GitHub sent you an invite that you haven't accepted.

Press Accept invite while signed in to GitHub.

You have access

You're in.

Press Open to go to the repository.

Repo not created yet

The organizer hasn't created the team repositories yet.

Nothing. You're added when they do.

The card shows on My Team. While you still have a step to take, it also shows on your event Overview.

Common questions

I added my GitHub link but I'm not in the repository.

You still need to accept the invite on GitHub. Check the inbox of the email on your GitHub account, or open github.com/orgs/<organization>/invitation while signed in.

My invite expired.

GitHub invites expire after 7 days. Press Get access on the card to get a new one.

I typed the wrong username.

Change it on your profile (Profile → Edit → GitHub), then press Get access on the card.

GitHub sent the invite to an email I don't use.

GitHub uses the email on your GitHub account. Sign in to GitHub with that account and open github.com/orgs/<organization>/invitation, or press Accept invite on the card.

My repository became read-only.

Repositories freeze when submissions close, so judges see the version you submitted. Ask your organizer if you think it closed too early.

I'm not the team leader. Do I get access?

Yes. Every member of the team is added, not only the leader.

I'm a judge or mentor.

Judges get read access to the repositories of the teams they judge, and mentors to the teams whose help requests they take. The same card shows on your judging and help desk pages.
