What are "Citing Cases"?

Learn how to access and search through cases that cite to a specific case, regulation, statute, or rule that you are viewing.

The "Citing Cases" tab lists cases that cite to the case, statute, regulation, or rule that you are viewing. You can access those cases by clicking on the "Citing Cases" tab, which appears at the top of the page for the case, regulation, statute, or rule that you are viewing:

Filtering Cases Within the "Citing Cases" Tab

You can use the Filter and Narrow function on the left side of the screen to find citing cases that match your search criteria, either via keyword search or by filtering by jurisdiction, motion type, cause of action, party type, or date.

Filtering "Citing Cases" by Keyword

  1. Enter your search term (keyword, party name, etc) into the search bar on the left side of the screen

  2. Hit Enter/Return on you keyboard or click the magnifying glass.

Filtering "Citing Cases" by Jurisdiction

The "Citing Cases"  section will initially capture cases from all jurisdictions.

To only see cases from from specific jurisdictions in the Citing Cases section, follow the steps below:

  1. Click on the "Select Courts" link in on the left side of the page.

2. Apply the jurisdiction(s) you want and click the "Apply Jurisdictions" button in the lower right corner of the screen.

Filtering "Citing Cases" by Motion Type:

The "Citing Cases" section will show you all cases that cite to your case, statute, rule, or regulation, regardless of motion type. But you have the option of limiting your results to cases that involve a motion to dismiss, a motion for summary judgment, or a motion to compel discovery. These options are presented under the filter entitled "Motion type," which appears along the left-hand side of the "Citing Cases" page, right under the jurisdiction filter.

To limit your results to one or more of these motion types, check the box next to your desired motion(s). For example, if you just want to see the citing cases that involve a motion for summary judgment, check the box next to that:

Filtering "Citing Cases" by Cause of Action:

You have the option of limiting the list of "Citing Cases" to those cases involving a specific cause of action. Suggested causes of action for limiting your results appear under the "Cause of action" heading. To see a complete list of all available causes of action, select "more causes of action."

To limit your results to one or more causes of action, check the box next to your desired cause(s) of action. For example, if you just want to see the citing cases that involve a claim for breach of fiduciary duty, check the box next to "breach of fiduciary duty."

Filtering "Citing Cases" by Party Type

You have the option of limiting the list of "Citing Cases" to those cases involving a party in a specific industry. Suggested party types for limiting your results appear under the "Party type" heading. To see a complete list of all available causes of action, select "more party types."

To limit your results to one or more party type, check the box next to your desired type(s) of party. For example, if you just want to see the citing cases that involve a party in commercial banking, check the box next to "commercial banking."

Filtering "Citing Cases" by Date

The list of "Citing Cases" is initially unrestricted by date, but if you would like to limit your results to a specific date range (January 1 of year A through December 31 of Year B), you can do so using the date filter, which appears under the heading that says "Any time" at the lower left-hand side of the "Citing Cases" page. Type your desired years into the search box and click the blue magnifying glass to limit your results to those years:
