What does this mean?
This error usually appears in Microsoft Office or Windows Explorer when the full file path β including all folders and the file name β exceeds the character limit set by Windows (typically 259 or 260 characters).
What is a file path?
A file path is the full address that tells your computer where a file is stored. It includes every folder leading to the file, plus the file name itself.
Examples:
C://User/Demo/Client Files/John_Smith
C://User/Demo/Client Files/John_Smith/ING/929410/Statement_01.pdf
The second example is longer and could easily exceed the character limit if more folders or longer names are added.
How to fix it:
Move the file to a higher-level folder (closer to the drive root, like
C://Documents
)Shorten folder or file names
Avoid deeply nested folder structures
Once the total character count in the path is under the limit, the error should disappear.
It is possible to rename files and folders using a custom zip download automatically, you can find those details in the guide below.
