What is Asian Handicap Betting and how does it work?

The Asian Handicap is a 2-way bet that originated in Indonesia and became popular in the early 21st century. With this type of bet, you can bet on the home team winning or the away team winning, but also on the number of sets, the number of goals or the number of points while adding a handicap or an advantage for one of the two teams. Asian handicap betting is available and is suitable for all sports.

The big difference between the European handicap and the Asian handicap is that there are decimal numbers and your bet can be refunded in some cases.

Let me show you some examples to understand how Asian Handicap betting works:

Here is a screenshot that was taken from Cbet.gg for the League 1 match between Brest and Metz. You can see that you can bet on the home team winning or the away team winning. You can also see that there are handicaps with whole numbers and decimal numbers.

Let's say you bet on Brest to win with a handicap of 1.5 goals, the bet looks like this: 1 (-1.5). For your bet to win, Brest must win the match by 2 goals or more. If Brest wins the match 3:2, then the bet will lose because if you count the handicap, the score is 1.5:2 for Metz.

If you bet on Metz winning by 1.5 goals, i.e. 2 (+1.5), then Metz must not lose by 2 goals or more or your bet will lose. If Metz loses by 1:2 then your bet wins because they lost by less than 2 goals.

If you bet on Brest to win by 0.5 goals, i.e. 1 (+0.5), your bet will be a double chance bet because if Brest draws or wins then your bet will win.

Let's take the example if you bet on a whole number in the Asian handicap market.

If you bet on 1 (0), your bet will take the form of a Draw No Bet, i.e. the bet will be refunded if there is a draw and your bet will win if the home team wins the match.

If you bet on 1 (-1), then your bet will be refunded if the home team wins 1:0.

If you bet on 2 (+2), then your bet will be refunded if the away team loses 2-0.

The asian handicap principle may seem complicated at first, but in reality it is simple to understand, let's take another example:

On this screenshot, you can see that Nice won 3-0 at Saint-Etienne, here are the results of different bets with an Asian handicap:

  • 1 (-2.5) the bet is lost, to win the bet, Saint-Etienne should have won 3-0.

  • 1 (+1.5) bet is lost, because Saint-Etienne lost by more than 2 goals

  • 1 (+3) bet is refunded, adding up the advantage, we have 3-3.

  • 2 (-2.5) the bet is won, because Nice won by 3 goals.
