State Training Program:

On August 1, 2001, the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC) implemented a mandatory server training requirement aimed at ensuring responsible alcohol service in licensed establishments. This requirement applies to licensees obtaining a new on-premises liquor license or transferring more than 50% interest in an existing on-premises license. The training is designed to educate personnel on how to serve alcohol responsibly, prevent underage sales, avoid over-service of intoxicated patrons, and comply with state alcohol laws.

According to MCL 436.1501(1), the law mandates that, at a minimum, supervisory personnel who have completed the server training program must be employed during all hours when alcoholic beverages are being served. This ensures that knowledgeable staff are always present to monitor and manage alcohol service, promoting both compliance and public safety.

The server training program covers crucial topics, including verifying IDs, identifying signs of intoxication, managing alcohol-related incidents, and understanding the legal responsibilities of alcohol servers. By requiring trained supervisory staff during all hours of alcohol service, the MLCC aims to reduce the risk of alcohol-related violations and incidents, ensuring a safer environment for patrons and the community.

This training requirement helps to create a culture of responsibility in Michigan’s licensed establishments, ensuring that alcohol is served legally and responsibly at all times.
