Detailed Information on RDR, Ethoca & CDRN Signup

Learn more about each type of chargeback alert.

Overview

We offer multiple chargeback prevention networks that work together to reduce disputes before they formally impact your processor account and chargeback ratio.

The three primary alert services are:

  • RDR (Rapid Dispute Resolution)

  • Ethoca Alerts

  • CDRN (Cardholder Dispute Resolution Network)

Each service operates differently and has different enrollment requirements and coverage.

1. RDR (Rapid Dispute Resolution)

What is RDR?

RDR is a Visa-owned dispute prevention solution operated through Verifi and Visa.

It automatically resolves eligible Visa disputes before they become formal chargebacks.

When a customer contacts their bank:

  • The dispute is intercepted early

  • A refund is automatically issued

  • The chargeback is prevented from formally hitting your processor

This helps:

  • Protect your chargeback ratio

  • Reduce Visa monitoring risks

  • Prevent processor holds or bans

  • Lower Visa VAMP exposure

What is needed for RDR enrollment?

Standard Processors/Gateways

Typically requires:

  • BIN

  • CAID

  • Billing descriptor

This information is usually obtained through:

  • VAR sheets

  • Processor documentation

  • Acquirer onboarding docs

Shopify & Stripe Exception

Shopify and Stripe do not expose BIN/CAID information directly.

For these platforms, enrollment typically requires:

  • 1–4 Visa ARNs (Acquirer Reference Numbers)

  • Recent transaction information

  • Active billing descriptor

Important RDR Limitations

A MID generally cannot be enrolled in:

  • Multiple RDR providers simultaneously

  • Native processor RDR equivalents + our RDR at the same time

Example:

  • Shopify NDRP

  • Stripe native dispute prevention

If already enrolled elsewhere:

  • Existing provider must disable enrollment first

  • Merchants may need to provide case IDs or disablement confirmation

RDR Coverage

  • Visa only

  • Highest prevention coverage among alert systems

  • Typically captures 80–90% of eligible Visa disputes

2. Ethoca Alerts

What is Ethoca?

Ethoca is owned by Mastercard.

Ethoca provides dispute alerts before a chargeback becomes formal, allowing merchants to proactively refund or resolve the transaction.

What is needed for Ethoca enrollment?

Typically:

  • Billing descriptor(s)

  • Merchant/store information

Unlike RDR:

  • Ethoca is descriptor-based

  • Not heavily dependent on BIN/CAID

  • Not processor-specific

This makes Ethoca more flexible across:

  • Shopify

  • Stripe

  • Multiple processors

  • Dynamic descriptor environments

Ethoca Coverage

  • Primarily Mastercard

  • Some Visa and additional issuer coverage

  • Coverage depends on issuer participation

Dynamic Descriptors

We can enroll:

  • Multiple descriptor variations

  • Dynamic billing descriptors

  • Multi-store descriptor structures

This is especially useful for:

  • High-risk merchants

  • MID orchestration setups

  • Multiple storefront environments

3. CDRN (Cardholder Dispute Resolution Network)

What is CDRN?

CDRN is another chargeback alert network that helps merchants receive early dispute notifications before formal chargebacks occur.

It operates through participating issuers and processors.

What is needed for CDRN enrollment?

Generally:

  • Billing descriptors

  • Merchant identification details

Like Ethoca:

  • Processor restrictions are lower

  • Descriptor enrollment is the primary requirement

CDRN Coverage

  • Broader issuer network participation

  • Additional coverage outside Visa/Mastercard direct ecosystems

  • Varies depending on participating banks

How All 3 Work Together

RDR

Best for:

  • Visa prevention

  • Automated resolutions

  • VAMP protection

Ethoca

Best for:

  • Mastercard coverage

  • Descriptor flexibility

  • Early issuer collaboration

CDRN

Best for:

  • Supplemental issuer coverage

  • Additional dispute visibility

Using all three together provides the broadest possible chargeback prevention coverage.

Important Notes About Alerts

Alerts protect your chargeback ratio

Alerts work by:

  • Refunding or resolving disputes before formal chargebacks occur

  • Preventing disputes from impacting processor metrics

Even if a merchant later wins a chargeback:

  • The chargeback still impacts the ratio historically

Alerts help avoid:

  • Monitoring programs

  • Processor reserves

  • Holds

  • Terminations

  • Visa VAMP escalation

Automated vs Manual Refunds

Ethoca/CDRN

Can typically:

  • Be automated

  • Be manually reviewed first

RDR

Generally auto-resolves disputes because:

  • It occurs directly at the network level

Thresholds can often be configured:
Example:

  • Auto-refund below $150 only

Common Reasons Enrollment Fails

  • Existing Enrollment

  • Merchant already enrolled:

    Through another provider

    Through Shopify NDRP
    Through Stripe native prevention
    Invalid ARNs

Possible causes:

Unsupported regions

ChaseNet/internal bank rails

Invalid transaction references

Non-covered processors

Descriptor Mismatch

If merchants:

  • Change descriptors

  • Change regions

  • Migrate stores

Then:

  • Re-enrollment may be required

  • New ARNs may be needed

Best Practices for Merchants

Recommended Setup

For strongest coverage:

  • RDR + Ethoca + CDRN together

  • Fraud prevention enabled

  • Order Insights enabled

  • Compelling Evidence enabled

Maintain Consistent Descriptors

Unique billing descriptors reduce:

  • “Unrecognized merchant” disputes

  • Friendly fraud

  • False alerts

Monitor Chargeback Ratios

Especially important for:

  • Shopify NDRP merchants

  • Visa VAMP monitoring

  • High-risk verticals

Typical Enrollment Timeline

Service

Typical Activation Time

RDR

Ethoca

1–3 business days

CDRN

1–3 business days

Timelines can vary depending on:

  • Processor responsiveness

  • Descriptor verification

  • Existing enrollments

  • Acquirer approvals
