GoFundMe Public Fundraisers via Charity Navigator

Updated over 2 weeks ago
  • Why is Charity Navigator offering this opportunity/Why should I make a fundraiser?

    • We're offering this opportunity because it directly aligns with our mission to make impactful giving easier for all:

      • After a donor completes a donation on the Charity Navigator website, we will allow you to create a fundraiser for that charity on the GoFundMe platform. This new feature enables you to easily create a public fundraiser for the charity you have just supported.

      • By creating a GoFundMe fundraiser, donors gain a seamless and exciting way to champion their favorite cause. Your personal donation becomes a powerful community effort, inspiring others and exponentially extending the reach and impact of their chosen charity.

      • We anticipate that this collaboration will significantly increase the total amount of money raised for nonprofits, allowing each organization to continue to do its important work and fulfill its mission.

  • What is the relationship between Charity Navigator and GoFundMe?

    • This collaboration is a strategic alliance and contractual partnership with the mutually shared goal of driving increased giving to impactful nonprofits.

  • If I have questions about my fundraiser, whom should I contact?

    • For questions regarding your fundraiser, please contact the GoFundMe Care team. To contact them, just visit the GoFundMe Help Center. There you can search for answers to your questions and contact the team using the “Contact us” button.

  • Are all donations made to the fundraiser tax-deductible?

    • Yes, donations made to certified nonprofit fundraisers on GoFundMe are tax-deductible. You can confirm this status by looking for the Tax Deductible.

  • Will I get notified when someone donates via my fundraiser?

    • Yes, as the organizer of the fundraiser, you’ll receive notifications when a donation is made. From within your fundraiser settings, you can choose to receive an email for every donation made or to receive a summary email of donations at the end of each day.

  • How do I manage my GoFundMe email settings?

  • What does this cost? / Does Charity Navigator or GoFundMe get a cut of the donations?

    • Fundraisers in the US on the GoFundMe platform have a small transaction fee of 2.2%+$0.30 applied to each donation. This is the only fee deducted by GoFundMe and covers all your fundraising needs. Additionally, donors can choose to leave an optional tip to GoFundMe. This is not required, and the tip amount can always be changed to $0. For more information about fees, check out the GoFundMe Pricing Page. There are no fees added by Charity Navigator for these public fundraisers..

  • What personal information do I have to share to start a fundraiser?

    • To start a certified charity fundraiser on GoFundMe, you’ll need to create a GoFundMe account, which involves sharing your first and last name, email address, and phone number. No other information is required to run a fundraiser on behalf of a charity.

  • Will the charity be notified that I started a fundraiser for them? What information of mine will be shared with the nonprofit?

    • Yes, nonprofits receive an email when a fundraiser is created on their behalf on GoFundMe. Regarding sharing information, before launching a fundraiser for a nonprofit, you’ll have the option to opt-in to sharing your information with them. You can decline to share, or if you’re comfortable sharing, they’ll be sent your name and email address.

  • Can I set up multiple fundraisers for multiple nonprofit organizations?

    • Definitely! There isn’t a limit to how many fundraisers you can start or how many organizations you can support.

  • Can I close/stop a fundraiser that I set up before the goal is reached?

    • Yes. On GoFundMe, you don’t have to reach your goal, and all funds raised will still be sent to the charity you’re fundraising for.

  • Why can’t I create a fundraiser for every charity?

    • To ensure a secure and trustworthy experience, we partnered with GoFundMe to process all charity fundraisers. This means you can create a fundraiser for a recently supported charity, as long as that charity is also a verified and approved organization on the GoFundMe platform. This process ensures all donations are sent directly to the correct charity and provides a layer of protection for donors.
