Why does the email to my client show opened when I know it wasn't?

Sometimes, an email may show as “opened” even though the recipient hasn't manually opened it. This can happen for a few reasons:

How Open Tracking Works

Open tracking lets you see if someone has opened your email. Here's how it works in plain terms:

  1. A Tiny Picture: A very small, invisible picture is included in your email.

  2. Email Opened: When someone opens the email, their email app downloads this tiny picture.

  3. We Get Notified: This download tells the email system that your email has been opened.

Things to Know:

  • Auto-preview by email apps: Many email clients (like Gmail, Apple Mail, or Outlook) automatically load a preview of the email and its images — including the invisible tracking pixel — which causes the system to count it as "opened".

  • Security filters: Some spam filters or antivirus software scan incoming emails and load tracking pixels as part of their checks.

  • Some email apps check for pictures ahead of time, which might say the email was opened even if it wasn’t. (If someone’s email app blocks pictures, it might not track the open.)

  • Sending a copy to yourself: If you have the email set to also go to yourself (e.g., a payment reminder), your own device or email client might trigger the “opened” status even if you didn’t open it manually.

How Click Tracking Works

Click tracking shows you if someone clicks on a link in your email. Here’s how it works:

  1. Links are Changed: Before your email is sent, the links are updated so they pass through the email system first.

  2. Click Happens: When someone clicks the link, they briefly go through Check Cherry's system.

  3. We Record: The system notes the click.

  4. They Go to the Website: After the system tracks the click, the person is sent to the original website.

Things to Know:

  • Some security programs might click links automatically to check if they’re safe, which can cause false reports.

  • People might notice that the link looks different and feel unsure about clicking it.

Email tracking is enabled by default in your Check Cherry account.

If you wish to disable it (we strongly recommend you keep it enabled), you can do so by going to Manage --> Business Settings and click Edit Settings.
