Cheezoo's Editing Recommendations:
Keep it Simple!
Brightly saturated colors, high contrast editing, or using your phone's pre-made filters may be tempting! But more often than not, these can badly impact the skin tones and colors of an image.
How Should I Edit the Images?
If there's a specific style you used on your Portfolio images, we'd recommend sticking with that, as it probably played a part in why your client wanted to work with you! (Unless a different style was discussed with your client.)
Should I Follow Editing Trends?
It's important that the images you take are usable for what your client needs, and sometimes trendy editing can become quickly outdated. To avoid this, we recommend going with a timeless and classic, true-to-life style!
Let's Walk Through a Few Editing Comparisons!
EXAMPLE 1:
Unedited, Straight From the Camera:
To start, here's an unedited image - straight out of the phone's camera! Notice how the colors in the image lean a bit cool, and overall the lighting is dark.
Editing We DON'T Recommend:
With this type of edit, the skin tones and color of the brick are being badly impacted, and overall the image feels a bit flat color-wise.
Editing We DO Recommend:
A more classic, clean, simple edit. Balanced skin tone, and true-to-life color!
EXAMPLE 2:
Unedited, Straight From the Camera:
Lighting is a bit underexposed, details in their faces aren't as prominent, and the greens are overpowering the image.
Editing We DON'T Recommend:
A high contrast style may be exciting at first, making the colors bright and vibrant. But notice how this type of extreme edit can badly impact the skin tones, and how details get lost due to the whites/highlights being blown out.
Editing We DO Recommend:
The skin tones feel level and balanced, while the greens are dialed back and not as overpowering, but still lush!
EXAMPLE 3:
Unedited, Straight From the Camera:
Notice how there's some overexposure from the sun, so we're losing some details in her face.
βEditing We DON'T Recommend:
Using a pre-made filter can be tempting (and fun to play with)! But notice how the color is so desaturated that her skin tones become washed out.
βEditing We DO Recommend:
Somewhere in between! Not too hot, not too cold, but just right!
EXAMPLE 4:
Unedited, Straight From the Camera:
In this image, notice how the colors are on the cooler side, with the light on their faces being a bit overexposed.
Editing We DON'T Recommend:
While the contrast between super dark blacks and really bright whites is exciting and dramatic, it can lead to details in their faces and clothing getting lost! (The stripes on his shirt are almost completely gone!)
βEditing We DO Recommend:
Not as dramatic, with no details lost!
When Should I Use Black and White Editing?
There's a strategy when it comes to using black and white editing!
For example: maybe the backgrounds are really distracting and busy. By changing the image to black and white, you can help your subjects become the main focus, rather than getting lost in the background!
Another example: let's say you have an image that is too bright, or overexposed, or maybe the colors aren't very good - and no matter what kind of color editing you try, it just can't be recovered. Try switching it to black and white, and see if that makes a
difference!
Final Thoughts on Editing
Developing your own style and learning how to edit can be intimidating! Just keep these tips in mind when editing your images:
Skin tones are the most important thing, and should be the highest priority!
Watch out for high contrast, overexposure, and high saturation - all of which can often badly impact the skin tones and details of the image!
Trends and filters may look cool and be fun to play with, but can become quickly outdated.
Less is more! Keep it simple!
But remember, if you'd rather not worry about editing, we do offer Cheezoo Image Editing for $0.22/image!
