How to Dress for the Photo Shoot
Updated over a month ago

What should I wear to the photo shoot?

As the photographer, there are a few things you'll need to consider when picking out your outfit:

  • Comfort - Choose clothing you can easily move around in and especially prioritize comfortable shoes! Wearing clothing that isn't too loose or too tight will make all the difference! Breathable fabrics are your friend!

  • Functionality - Your job as a photographer may require you to bend, kneel, crouch, climb, or squeeze into various places to get the perfect shot. Prioritize clothing that you feel confident and professional in, that also allows you to move around freely. Also prioritize clothing with pockets!

  • Weather - Layers are a must, depending on the temperature! Consider waterproof/moisture-wicking clothing if there's a chance of rain!

  • Location - Are you photographing outdoors or indoors? Is the ground flat or rocky? All things to think about!

  • Event type - Are you photographing a family portrait session, high school senior pictures, or a wedding? Depending on if the event is casual, semi-formal, or formal will play into how you should dress!

Portrait Sessions

For most portrait sessions, a nice shirt and jeans will do the trick! Keep in mind you will be on your feet photographing, so comfortable shoes are an absolute must!

Weddings or Formal Events

Each wedding and event will be different, but it's incredibly important that you dress up! Here are some things to consider:

  • We'd recommend investing in a nice pair of comfortable dress shoes, as you will be on your feet the entire day. Think classy, but comfortable - something you can wear for hours on end!

  • For clothing, choose dark or neutral colors, so you don't draw attention away from your main subjects. Blending into the background is key!

  • Avoid busy patterns, logos, or bright colors. Check with your wedding couple if there are any colors that should absolutely be avoided.

  • Regardless of gender, wear clothing that fits you well, and isn't too tight or too loose.

  • Did we mention to dress up? :)

Outfit Ideas

For Portrait Sessions:

  • Neutral colored clothing that allows freedom of movement while blending into the background (getting the perfect shot may require you to bend, kneel, crouch, climb, or squeeze into various places)

  • No bright colors, busy patterns, or logos

  • Layers if photographing outside (jackets, cardigans)

  • Comfortable, close-toed shoes (consider the type of terrain you'll be photographing on)

For Weddings/Formal Events:

  • Stick to neutral colors such as black, grey, or navy

  • Comfortable dress shoes, flats, or shoes with a low heel (no high heels) - keep in mind that you will be on your feet the entire day!

  • Slacks/suit paints and a button down shirt (optional: tie/bowtie, jacket, blazer)

  • A well-fitted suit

  • Blouse and slacks (optional: blazer or jacket)

  • Collared shirt and long skirt

  • A nice, loose fitting dress that is comfortable to work in, but matches the formality of the event

  • Jumpsuit (optional: blazer or jacket)
