Use CarPlay with a BMW TFT and ConnectedRide

How BMW ConnectedRide behaves while CarPlay runs on the CHIGEE Display, and how to set up headset audio.

The BMW Motorrad Connected app, the BMW TFT navigation display, ride recording and headset audio are different functions. Tell us which function you want to keep while using CarPlay or Android Auto on your CHIGEE Display.

  • TFT navigation: navigation shown on the BMW TFT depends on the applicable phone-to-TFT connection.

  • Background ride recording: recording a trip in the phone app is a separate function from displaying navigation on the TFT.

  • Vehicle data: distinguish data in the BMW app/TFT from data read by the CHIGEE Display through its supported vehicle interface.

  • Headset audio: music, prompts and microphone input depend on the pairing arrangement and headset capabilities.

We cannot confirm simultaneous operation for every combination of phone, operating system, TFT, app and headset firmware. A connection problem affecting one function does not automatically establish that every Connected feature is unavailable.

If a function stops when CHIGEE connects, park the motorcycle and record which connection or feature changes. Send your phone model and OS version, BMW model and year, TFT type, CHIGEE model and firmware, Connected app version and headset setup. We will check the applicable configuration before suggesting changes.

Temporarily disconnecting the TFT may help isolate a connection issue, but it can also stop the BMW functions you want to use. Do not permanently remove the pairing as a general fix without checking those requirements.

Set up the basic audio connection

When you use CarPlay or Android Auto on the CHIGEE Display, pair your headset directly with your phone for music, navigation prompts and calls:

  1. Pair your phone with your headset and check that music plays.

  2. Connect your phone to the CHIGEE Display with CarPlay or Android Auto.

  3. For headset microphone input on Android Auto, also pair the headset with the CHIGEE Display in its headset setting.

  4. While parked, test navigation prompts and the on-screen voice assistant button.

The Android Auto connection between the CHIGEE Display and your headset is for microphone input only. It doesn't carry navigation audio.

Add the BMW TFT

If you also want your phone or headset connected to the BMW TFT, test the extra TFT connection with the pairing modes your headset supports. Results depend on your phone, headset and firmware, and a headset with several saved pairings doesn't always support every connection at the same time.

If audio or voice input stops working after you add the TFT, temporarily disconnect the TFT pairing and test the basic connection again. If the basic connection works, the combined setup is the cause; reconnect the TFT and check your headset's pairing modes. Setups tested by a rider

The Stammering Biker, a YouTube creator, tested these audio setups with a CHIGEE AIO-5 and a BMW TFT in the video Discover the Best CHIGEE AIO-5 Audio Configuration for Your Needs! These are rider-tested setups, not official CHIGEE configurations. They describe the devices and software used in that video; the exact tested versions are not specified here, so they do not establish support for other or later versions. Results depend on your phone, iOS or Android version and headset, so test your own setup while parked.

  • Configuration 1: your phone connects to the CHIGEE Display, and your headset pairs directly with your phone. This is the same as the basic setup above. Pros: simple, Siri works, and everything works with the motorcycle switched off. Cons: no control through the BMW TFT.

  • Configuration 2: your phone connects to the CHIGEE Display, and your headset and phone pair through the BMW TFT so you can control them from the TFT. Pros: more control options and notifications on both screens. Cons: possibly distracting, no Siri, and no audio with the motorcycle switched off.

  • Configuration 3: if your headset supports two channels, your phone pairs with the TFT, and your headset pairs with both your phone and the TFT. Pros: Siri and audio with the motorcycle switched off. Cons: far more prone to issues, including audio problems.

  • Bonus configuration: your phone also connects to the TFT so the ConnectedRide app can record trips. Pros: ConnectedRide works. Cons: needs Apple Shortcuts and automations to work properly.
