Requesting Medication Refills

Tips for requesting refills of your prescription.

Updated this week

The process for requesting a medication refill varies depending on whether the medication is a controlled substance or non-controlled substance. Knowing what to expect with helps you maintain your treatment plan with ease.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Policies Vary: Policies around controlled substances can differ based on state regulations, insurance requirements, and pharmacy guidelines.

  • Effective Communication: Effective collaboration between you, your provider, and your pharmacist is essential for resolving prescription-related concerns promptly.

  • Timeline: Waiting 7 days before inputting a request to move your prescription will increase your chances that the original pharmacy will get stock and be able to fill.

Controlled vs Non-Controlled Medications:

Non-controlled medications are generally prescribed for common conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol, bacterial infections, or allergies.

Controlled medications, on the other hand, are regulated by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). These medications are commonly prescribed for ADHD (Adderall, Vyvanse, and Ritalin).

Provider Tips

  • We strongly recommend sticking with your current provider whenever possible as seeing the same provider helps ensure continuity of care.

  • Important note: Your provider may require additional information or an appointment before sending a prescription refill.

Requesting A New Fill

Refills for Non-Controlled Medications

To request a refill for a non-controlled substance, follow these steps:

  1. Open a chat in the Circle Medical app or web portal to send a refill request message.

  2. Include your medication name, dosage, and pharmacy information.

Please note: non-controlled medication refill requests submitted via the app or web portal are not guaranteed. Your provider may require additional information or a new appointment before approving your non-controlled medication refill request.

Refills for Controlled Medications

To request a refill for a controlled substance, follow these steps:

  1. Schedule an appointment with your primary care provider via the app or web portal.

  2. Discuss your medication needs during the appointment.

  3. Your provider may issue a new prescription for the controlled medication to be filled at your preferred pharmacy.

Important note: Due to the stricter regulations surrounding controlled medications, refills for controlled substances require an appointment every 30 days with your provider. If it has been more than 30 days since your last appointment, a new appointment is needed.

Pharmacy Tips

  • Before visiting the pharmacy, always ensure you check the prescription status by contacting your pharmacy to confirm that your prescription is ready for pickup.

  • Controlled substances cannot be sent to CVS or Amazon Pharmacy.

  • Be sure to confirm with your pharmacy that they accept controlled substance prescriptions from telehealth providers.

  • Double check your preferred pharmacy in the Circle Medical app or web portal before your appointment.
