Best Practices: Setting Up Media Monitoring for a Product Launch

An overview of best practise for monitoring product launches

Updated over 3 weeks ago

Purpose

Provide guidance on configuring CisionOne monitoring to track the visibility, sentiment, and impact of a product launch.

1. Define Clear Launch Objectives

  • Identify what success looks like: volume, sentiment, message pull-through, share of voice, key publication alignment.

  • Establish KPIs early so monitoring can align (e.g., target SOV increase, % positive sentiment).

2. Build Targeted Mention Streams

  • Include variations of the product name, brand name, and descriptors.

  • Add expected journalist phrases (“new release,” “rollout,” “launch event”).

  • Add exclusion terms to filter unrelated chatter.

3. Include Competitors and Context

  • Track competitor launches occurring during the same window.

  • Add category keywords to give context in reports (e.g., “EV market,” “AI assistant devices”).

4. Set Up Alerts and Thresholds

  • Create real-time alerts for major spikes in coverage or negative sentiment.

  • Set daily or weekly summaries for stakeholders.

5. Create Launch-Specific Dashboards

  • Include volume over time, sentiment trends, top media outlets, share of voice, message penetration.

  • Add widgets for influencer impact and social amplification.

6. Document and Report Impact

  • Produce launch reports capturing pre-launch baseline, peak-launch period, and post-launch tail.

  • Compare against competitor trends to understand relative success.
