I'm unable to record with the Chrome Extension

Claap Chrome Extension recording not working

Few things are more frustrating than being ready to record and having nothing happen. The good news: this is almost always a quick fix. Work through the steps below in order and stop as soon as recording works again.

Nine times out of ten, this comes down to an outdated Chrome or Claap extension. Update both, restart Chrome, and try again that alone solves most cases.

First, Check These Symptoms

You're in the right place if any of these sound familiar:

  • Clicking Record does nothing at all

  • Recording starts but immediately stops or produces no output

  • The extension seems frozen or won't open

  • Screen capture never kicks in despite your best efforts

Update Chrome

To update Chrome, head to Menu > Help > About Google Chrome. If an update is available, you'll see an Update Google Chrome button : click it, then hit Relaunch. If no button appears, you're already on the latest version

Restart the Claap Chrome Extension

Sometimes the extension just needs a fresh start without a full reinstall. Go to your Extensions page, find Claap, and toggle it off then back on. This resets its internal state and clears minor glitches that updates alone won't fix.

Clear Chrome cache

A bloated or corrupted cache can quietly interfere with how extensions behave. Head to chrome://history/ in your address bar, click Clear Browsing Data, choose a time range, and confirm. Then relaunch Chrome and try again.

Restart Chrome and your device

It sounds almost too simple, but a full restart clears out memory issues and background processes that can block screen capture. Close Chrome completely, not just the window. Restart your machine, reopen Chrome, and give it another shot.

Reinstall the Claap Chrome extension

If the extension itself has become corrupted, a clean reinstall is the most reliable fix. Right-click the Claap icon in your toolbar, select Remove from Chrome, then close and reopen Chrome. Reinstall the Claap Chrome Extension using this link.

Check Chrome screen recording permissions

This one catches a lot of people off guard. Even if Chrome and Claap are fully up to date, your operating system might be blocking Chrome from capturing your screen at the system level and that will stop recording from working no matter what else you try.

How to know it's fixed

  • The Claap extension opens without any errors

  • Clicking Record starts a recording immediately

  • The clip appears in your Claap workspace once you stop

Why does this keep happening ?

The most common culprit is a version mismatch between Chrome and the Claap extension. Chrome updates silently in the background, and if the extension hasn't caught up, things can break without warning. A corrupted cache, a stale extension state, or missing screen recording permissions at the system level can also cause the same symptoms which is why it's worth working through each fix rather than jumping straight to reinstalling.
