Gradebook categories

Learn how to create gradebook categories for course activities.

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to assign activities to categories in a Moodle course.

Procedures

  1. Click the Grades tab.

  2. Click the dropdown menu which defaults to Grader report and select Gradebook setup.

  3. Click the Add dropdown menu on the right and choose Add category.

  4. Name the category, e.g., quizzes. Choose a grade aggregation using the dropdown menu – either Natural or Simple weighted mean of grades. Check the box to Exclude empty grades, so future assignments will not count as a zero in the grade average. Decide if you want to drop the lowest grade in this category. The most common number is 1 - allowing one grade to be dropped.

  5. Click the Show more link. Decide how you want the grades in this category to be displayed and make a choice from the dropdown menu. By clicking the question mark as shown below, you can see your choices.

  6. Save your changes.

  7. The new category will now be visible in your gradebook.

  8. If you have already made an uncategorized quiz assignment, click the Settings tab in the quiz assignment.

  9. Expand the Grade section in the assignment settings and change the category in the dropdown menu to the category of your choice.

  10. Save your changes.

  11. The assignment will now show up in its proper category in the gradebook
