Purpose
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to assign activities to categories in a Moodle course
Procedures
Click the Grades tab
Click the dropdown menu which defaults to Grader report and select Gradebook setup
Click Add category
Name the category, e.g., quizzes. Choose a grade aggregation using the dropdown menu β the most common choice is Simple weighted mean of grades. Check the box to Exclude empty grades, so future assignments will not count as a zero in the grade average. Decide if you want to drop the lowest grade in this category β the most common number is 1 allowing one grade to be dropped
Decide how you want the grades in this category to be displayed and make a choice from the dropdown menu. By clicking the question mark as shown below, you can see your choices
Save your changes
The new category will now be visible in your gradebook
If you have already made an uncategorized quiz assignment, click the Settings tab in the quiz assignment
Expand the Grade menu option and change the category in the dropdown menu to the category of your choice

The assignment will now show up in its proper category in the gradebook
If you want to move a rogue assignment to a category, check the box on the far right of the assignment row in Gradebook setup. Use the dropdown menu at the bottom of the page to place the assignment in an existing category
