Setting up an Assignment with Turnitin

Monitor for plagiarism and AI use

Purpose

This article walks through the steps to setup a Turnitin Assignment.

Procedure

  1. Turn on Edit mode

2. Click to add an activity

Add an activity or resource selection

3. Click the Turnitin Assignment mini tile

4. Scroll down to Similarity Report Options – Do you want to exclude a small match of 5%? Put a number in the second to last box from the bottom and change Words to percent in the dropdown menu

5. Scroll down if you want Turnitin to check for grammar. If you do, change No to yes in the dropdown menu and check the feedback categories, e.g., usage, mechanics...

6. Adjust any other settings as you normally would - such as groups in Common Module Settings, and then save your changes

7. After clicking their assignment link in Moodle, students will see a submission link - lower right corner - and will be able to upload or drag their file to submit it

8. Students will click the Submission button

9. For this test, a paper was submitted that was 100% copied after asking ChatGPT to write an essay about pets. Clicking the red triangle takes the instructor to the student paper and a side navigation tool bar

10. Use the red buttons in the side navigation bar to interpret the originality report. Note the blue and white AI button at the bottom; this tells the instructor how much of the paper was generated by artificial intelligence
