Using the Restrict Access Feature

Learn how to make an assignment available for one or a few students

Purpose

This article describes how to use the restrict access feature in Moodle

Procedure

  1. If you want to restrict an activity to a single student, click the activity link in Moodle, make sure Edit mode is on, and scroll down to the Restrict access option. Click Add restriction

  2. Click the User profile box

  3. Use the dropdown menu next to the words User profile field to select a user identifier such as email address

  4. Type in the email address or other user identifier after the “is equal to” box

  5. Save your changes

  6. The activity will display with a message about who the activity is meant for. This could be a FERPA violation, so it’s better to hide the activity from other students. To do this, click the eyeball next to User profile field in the last step

  7. Edit the assignment by clicking the three vertical dots on the far right of the activity name and then select the Edit settings option

  8. Return to the Restrict access section and find the eyeball icon. Click it to hide the activity from other students. A line through the eyeball indicates the activity is hidden. The assignment will only show up in the selected student’s Moodle course

    MAKE SURE TO CLICK THE EYEBALL ICON SO OTHER STUDENTS CAN’T SEE THE RESTRICTED ASSIGNMENT!!

    IT MUST HAVE LINE THROUGH IT

  9. Save your changes
