Purpose
The purpose of this article is to provide step-by-step instructions for creating an interactive video in a Moodle course.
Procedure
Click the More dropdown menu and select Content bank.
Click the Add button and scroll down to Interactive Video.
Click the Next button in the pop up if you want to take the tour. If not, click the Exit button.
Click the dashed box to upload a video from your computer or to add a link to a video.
In this example, a YouTube video source URL is pasted into the right-side box. Click the Insert button.
Add the name of the video in the Title block.
Open the first bar below the video square and name your interactive content.
Save your changes by clicking the button at the bottom of the page.
The video will now display.
Click the Edit button to add interactions. You can do this when you first add your video, or you can come back at a later time to add interactions.
Click Add interactions.
The video and a toolbar will appear.
For this activity, multiple choice questions about the video will be inserted. Explore the toolbar to learn about other options.
At this point, return to your video in another tab and write down your questions and timings (when the question should appear in the H5P video).
When you have your questions and timings prepared, return to the Moodle tab and fill out the question form. Below, the Poster format is selected with the first question timing at the 23 second mark. The 2 second Display time is sufficient because the video automatically pauses.
Make sure to select Correct for the correct answer when inputting answer options.
Save your changes.
The video will reappear with circles on the timeline indicating question placement.
Drag the box to the location where you want your Submit assignment button and click the green star. Then click Add submit screen at….
Below, the video ends at 3:08, but the Submit button for students is at 3:00 - before the credits.
Play the video to check your question placement. You can resize the question box by dragging the corners, and you can change the screen position by dragging the question box to another location. Make sure your question square is long enough to at least partially display the Check/Continue button, or students may not realize they have to use the side scroll bar to see it.
Now that the content is created in the Content bank, return to your course page and click Add an activity or resource in the appropriate location.
Select the H5P mini tile.
Fill out the name of the activity, a description (optional), and check Display on course page (optional).
Next, prepare to add your content by clicking the file icon.
Select Content bank from the File picker options and then click the file in your content bank.
Verify the file and click Select this file.
The file will appear.
Open activity setting sections to apply assignment criteria as desired.
Save your changes.
The activity will display on your course home page.
Note
There is no way to limit the number of times a student can watch the video and answer the quiz questions, so an H5P Interactive Video is best used as an informal assessment.
When students participate in the activity, they will answer each question and then click the Check button. Feedback is immediate.
Students will then click the Continue button to end the pause and continue watching the video.
At the end of the activity, the student must click the Submit Answers button. Make sure they understand they must submit to complete the activity.
Adding H5P interactive videos is a great way to increase engagement in your course. If you have any questions about adding H5P content, please contact LMS Support!
