Creating a Standard Assignment Dropbox

Learn how to add a drop box for students to submit assignments.

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to provide step-by-step instructions for creating an assignment drop box in a Moodle course.

Procedure

  1. Make sure Edit mode in on.

  2. In the appropriate location in your course, click Add and then Activity or resource.

  3. Choose the Assignment tile.

  4. Name the assignment, (optional) type in a description, and (optional) check the box next to Display description on course page (optional).

  5. Set availability – if you use the Turnitin plugin, the word Dropped will appear in the student grade view unless the postdate (Remind me to grade by) is set to a day that has already passed.

  6. Set the category in the Grade section

    Category set to Assignments.

  7. As of 2/26/2025, do not use the Turnitin plagiarism plugin. Use the Turnitin mini tile instead of the Assignment tile if you want a plagiarism check.

  8. Set any other criteria as you normally would do.

  9. Save changes.

    Save button.

  10. The assignment will show up on your course page.

  11. Students will see a submission button.

  12. They will be able to upload or drag and drop their paper.

  13. Click on the link in your course and then click the Submissions tab to see what has been turned in.

  14. Click the Grade button to grade the assignment.

  15. Use the toolbar tools to mark the paper.

  16. Assign the grade.

  17. Save your changes.

  18. The grade will automatically appear in the course gradebook.
