Submit an Assignment on Behalf of a Student

If a student is unable to submit an assignment through Moodle, instructors can upload the submission on the student's behalf.

Submit a Student's Assignment

  1. Open your Moodle course.

  2. Select the Assignment activity.

  3. From the assignment page, click the Submissions tab.

  4. Locate the student in the submissions table.

  5. Click the More actions (︙) menu in the Status Column next to the student's name.

  6. Select Edit submission.

  7. Upload the student's file by either:

    • Dragging and dropping the file into the upload area, or

    • Clicking Add... to browse for the file on your computer.

  8. Click Save changes. This will put the submission in a draft status.

  9. Click the More actions (︙) menu and select Submit for grading.

The assignment is now submitted on behalf of the student and will appear in the grading workflow just like a student-submitted assignment.

Best Practices

  • Only submit work that was provided directly by the student.

  • Keep any email or other documentation showing when the student submitted the work to you.

  • If you need to replace the file before grading, return to the Submissions page, open the More actions (︙) menu for the student, and select Revert the submission to draft, then you can select Edit Submission again.

Tips

  • This feature is useful when a student experiences technical difficulties or when accommodations require an instructor to submit work on the student's behalf.

  • After uploading the file, you can grade the submission as you normally would on the Submissions page or in the Grade view.
