Forum Basics

The Forum activity allows students to participate in discussions by posting responses and replying to their classmates' comments.

Create a Forum

  1. Turn Edit mode on.

    Edit mode button.

  2. Click the + icon in a course section.

  3. Select Activity or resource.

  4. Choose Forum.

  5. Enter a forum name.

  6. Add instructions in the Description box.

  7. Select a Forum type (see below for common forum types and their usage).

    Common Forum Types

    • Standard forum: Students can start discussions and reply to others.

    • Q and A forum: Instructors must post to the forum first so students can reply to the initial post. Students must reply to the post before seeing others’ responses.

    • Single simple discussion: One set topic for a focused discussion.

  8. Set either Whole forum grading to Scale or Point or set Ratings to Sum of ratings. Do not set both or you will end up with duplicate tabs in the gradebook.

  9. Go through and select any other settings you wish. Availability, Attachment and word count, Completion conditions, etc

  10. Click Save and display.

    Save button.

11. If using a Q and A Forum, make the first post (Question) so students can reply to it (Answer). If you are not using a Q and A forum, you can skip this step.

How Students Participate

  1. Click the forum link.

  2. Click Add discussion topic - unless it's a Q & A forum.

  3. Post a response.

  4. Reply to classmates.
