Overview
Instructors and students may encounter the following error when working with a Moodle quiz that contains Essay (auto-grade) questions:
Can't find data record in the database table quiz_attempts
This error can occur when Copyleaks is enabled on the quiz, and the quiz contains an Essay (auto-grade) question.
How to Resolve the Issue
There are two ways to resolve this issue.
Option 1: Turn Off Copyleaks for the Quiz
If you need to continue using the Essay (auto-grade) question type, you can disable Copyleaks for that specific quiz.
Open the quiz.
Select Settings.
Scroll to the Copyleaks section.
Turn Copyleaks off.
Select Save and display or Save and return to course.
Once Copyleaks is disabled, students should be able to access and complete the quiz without encountering the error.
Important: Turning off Copyleaks for a quiz means that Copyleaks will not process submissions from that quiz.
Option 2: Replace the Essay (auto-grade) Question
If plagiarism detection is required for the quiz, replace the Essay (auto-grade) question with Moodle's standard Essay question type.
This change should be made before students begin the quiz. If students have already started the quiz, use Option 1 to avoid disrupting existing attempts. If you choose to replace the question instead, you will need to delete the existing quiz attempts before making the change. Deleting attempts permanently removes those attempts and any associated student responses.
Open the quiz and select Questions.
Locate the Essay (auto-grade) question.
Remove or replace the question.
Add a new question using Moodle's standard Essay question type.
Save the changes and test the quiz.
The standard Moodle Essay question does not use the same auto-grading functionality and can be used with Copyleaks.
