Panopto: Course Setup

This article describes the steps to set up a Panopto course folder in a course or use the My Folder to record and share videos.

Purpose

If you plan on using a Panopto course folder, this article outlines the process of adding the Panopto Block and/or External Tool to a course. If you do not wish to use a Panopto course folder, this article also outlines accessing and using the My folder in Panopto.

Procedure

If you are building your course from scratch or planning to use a Panopto Course Folder for the first time, add the Panopto Block and the Panopto External Tool to your course.

Both the Panopto Block and the Panopto External Tool are required to enable full Panopto functionality in your course.

How to Add Panopto Block:

For your Moodle Course to show the Panopto content that has been recorded, you'll need to enable the Panopto Block on your course page

  1. In the course you are adding the Panopto block, toggle on Edit mode, and then expand the block drawer in the upper right-hand corner

  2. At the top of the block drawer, select Add a Block

  3. On the Add a Block pop-up menu, scroll down and select Panopto

  4. Verify that the block was added to the Block drawer

  5. If your course has already been provisioned, you will see the following:

Panopto Block with a section for completed recordings and links

  6. If the Panopto block shows "Provision Course," click the link to provision the course. This is required to link the course folder to Panopto.

How to Add Panopto External Tool:

  1. Toggle Edit Mode On

  2. On the course page, where you want to add the Panopto External tool, select the + icon. A dropdown menu will open. Click on Activity or Resource.

  3. Select Panopto

Panopto Activity from the Activity chooser

  4. Give the new tool a name

  5. Do not select content.

    1. Selecting content will add a single video to your course

    2. By not selecting content, you are adding the Panopto course folder for a centralized location to view all course videos.

Select content button with a red X on top of it.

  6. Change the grade type to "None"

  7. Change the activity completion tracking to "Do not indicate..."

  8. Click Save and return to course

Accessing your My Folder in Panopto:

If you do not wish to have a Panopto course folder, you can disregard the steps above and purely use the My Folder in Panopto to record and link videos:

  1. Click the Panopto link in your course’s side navigation bar.

    Link labeled Panopto Link.

  2. You will see your My Folder located in the left side menu.

Side navigation bar in Panopto account with My Folder highlighted.

  3. Click Create to record a video. Once you are finished, it will upload to your My Folder automatically unless you select your course folder from the dropdown menu on the video processing page.

  4. If you save to My Folder, you can add subfolders and drag each video to the preferred subfolder for better organization. You can then link or embed your video in your course from My Folder.

  5. Change your permissions by hovering over the video in My Folder and clicking the Share icon.

  6. Click the Change link.

    Highlight of the Change link.

  7. Panopto defaults to Restricted. Change to Your Organization (unlisted) or Public (unlisted).

From the sharing screen, you can also grab the link to the video if you wish to share videos that way. You do not need to grab the link if you are embedding videos within a course.

To embed videos, you can use the Panopto icon in any text editor or use the Panopto activity (same as above for the Panopto Course Folder) and select a specific video (Select Content button).
