Course Visibility and Start Date

Learn how to make a course visible to students

Updated over 6 months ago

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to make a Moodle course visible to students by adjusting the visibility and start date settings.

Note

If you do NOT open your courses to students on your own, your 16-week and 8-week courses will open automatically on the business day before the first day of classes at 4pm. Instructors are fully responsible for opening variable start/end date courses.

Also, please do not adjust the end dates of your course. The end date should only be set to the date that coincides with the college calendar

Procedure

  1. Log in to Moodle and navigate to your course homepage

  2. Click on the Settings tab in the in-course navigation bar (just below your course banner image)

Course tabs with the Settings tab highlighted

  3. In the General section, change the Course visibility option from Hide to Show

    Course visibility set to Show

  4. Set the Course start date to the first day of class or earlier if you want students to be able to view the course before the term officially begins. You do not need to fill in the time blocks, but if you do, use the 24 hour clock. Example: 24 00 for midnight

Course start date set to 11 February 2025

  5. Click Save and display

Button labeled Save and display

Your course is now visible to students!
