Gradebook Setup: Categories and Weights

Learn how to setup your gradebook with categories and weights

Purpose

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how to set up categories and weights in the gradebook

Note

Reference your syllabus as you set up your course gradebook. Matching the categories and weights in your course gradebook to your course syllabus is essential.

Procedures

  1. On your course homepage, click on the Grades tab

  2. Click on the dropdown and select Gradebook setup

Add Categories

  1. Click on the Add category option under Add at the top of the page:

  1. Give the category a name

  2. Review the rest of the settings and change them as desired

  3. Click on Save

  4. Repeat as necessary


Move a Single Item/category

  1. Click on the two-sided arrow to the left of the item you want to move. This will expand your Gradebook setup page with spaces where you can select the new location of the item

  2. Click on the dashed line at the point where you want to insert the item. See the illustration below. Pay attention to the indentations of the lines. A slightly indented line indicates placement under the above category. A dashed line with no indent indicates the same level as a category.

Your item should now have moved to your chosen location in the gradebook.

You can also move categories around using this method. Make sure to select the long dashed line that is on the same level as the other categories or you will move a category within another category.

3. Repeat until your Gradebook is organized.


Move Multiple Items

  1. Click on the small box to the far left of the item you want to move. A checkmark will appear in the box. You can select multiple items to move

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Move in the sticky footer.

  3. From the pop-up box, select the category you want the item moved to.

  4. Select the Move button


Weights

The total weight value for the gradebook must equal 100. Moodle will automatically adjust weights to compensate for any manual changes.

  1. To adjust weights, click on the box to the left of the weight you want to change

  2. Type in the weight

  3. Click on Save changes at the bottom of the page in the sticky footer.

Keep the box checked so any further weight changes will not affect the weights you adjusted.

A message will appear at the top indicating that weights have been adjusted to total 100. Any weights that were not checked will be adjusted.
